You can do that? I thought second and THIRD are locked out when the skip shift is active.
Right, the skip shift is 1 - 4.
I just shift to 2nd after I hit 20 MPH. No big deal.
It seems many here get worked up over it. I have had it happen twice, and my C7 has 350 Miles on it. I just wasn't paying attention when it happened, now I do.

On the rare occasion the skip shift engages, this is what I do. Or, just wait a few seconds for the car to decelerate and then you can use 2nd. The skip shift window is very narrow, it usually only comes into play in very slow starting situations.
The CAGS is much less intrusive than the C6/5s were. I was all ready to install the bypass like I did on prior models but it just seems to have a much smaller lock-out window. If i do get the lockout I just slip it into 4th and back to second real quick. No problem.
Run up the RPM some and it'll disappear thne shift to 2nd; if you can get the RPMs up that high stay in 1st or shift to 4th then back down. I just raise the RPM faster and can save my money!
If you miss that (1-4) shift message and shift into 2nd will it really damage your trans???
Not sure about the C7, but the owner's manual for the C6 (yeah, I actually read it) states very emphatically IN BIG BOLD PRINT that damage can occur if you force the gear shift into 2nd or 3rd while the light is illuminated. At least for the C6, there are very specific conditions that need to be met for the skip-shift solenoid to engage: 1) engine coolant temp must be above 169 deg, and 2) speed must be between 15-19 MPH, and 3) throttle position sensor must be less than 21%. [See section 5-21 in the OM]
It is also true that once you shift from 1st to 4th gear, you can then access either the 2nd or 3rd gear even if you're still in the restricted MPH range. What I typically do when I'm lightly accelerating, rather than fight the RPM forced-shift process, is depress the clutch, slide the gear lever into 4th WITHOUT RE-ENGAGING THE CLUTCH and then go immediately back to 2nd or 3rd and continue on. The alternative is to simply start in 2nd gear or when appropriate, roll the stop in 2nd without going to first. Honestly, I've never really found the feature to be that intrusive during everyday driving.
