This is the problem. In the world of "hand built cars" that demand a premium, demand should certainly outstrip supply, not the other way around.
The Viper is just not special enough to be desirable enough to a large enough audience. The vast majority of the reason for that is poor marketing. That includes everything from initial product specifications/pricing to fit the market they want to sell in to the final execution/sales. GM clearly understands they have to move forward to appeal to new audiences vs Ralph Gilles who seems to not get that just selling to existing buyers will never grow sales numbers. That and the fact that their 'models' all seem too similar to one another in look, price, and performance vs the Corvette which has had better variety/price/performance and thus appeals to a broader audience and thus sells far more.
I do agree with this, but feel it really is too late for Viper. The company is not Honda (with the late NSX started in 1990), and doesn't have deep enough pockets to carry a car for years with no profit and no prospects for same.
Its a nice car and Im sure its well made..however its not $50,000 nicer. Sorry, stop being greedy and start being competitve
I don't think they are being greedy, they priced the car where they thought they should to recoup their costs. You have to remember the Viper is hand built and limited volume, not an assembly line built huge volume car like the Vette. The Viper paint is to die for right down to the hand sand and polish, we all know the Vette paint quality. The Vipers materials are far superior to the Vette and the car itself is far superior as well. I agree it should have been 20k less, imagine if the SRT was $79995, it would do a lot of damage to the C7 sales. Bottom line is it would be very sad to lose it, I hope they can right the ship and keep on producing them.

That's right....soon there will be more C7s than all the vipers ever made since 1992. That's exclusivity but it comes at a price and production risk.
This is true but, I don't see where it's 'by design'. To my knowledge SRT has never set a production limit on the Viper meaning that if they could sell 22k a year they would.
As an example, the 'exclusivity' argument coming from lack of sales should also apply to other vehicles like the Chevy SSR.
Well, think of it this way, Mr. Mod: it could've been that he sold off his loaded 2014 Z51 vert for one of the 785* Porsche GT3, with 469 hp, costing $131K** that have a problem with some burning up from engine fires. (recall in place now)
Yes, it could be worse. Great cars but just a little too hot.

Not true, they are not set up to mass produce the Viper.
They need to put the new hell cat in it and make it more affordable, maybe paint it like a normal car, (they paint the viper just like Bentley does). My last car SRT8 392, had a better paint job than my new c7, If the viper was in the 70K price range I would be in.... But until then the c7 is the best bang for the buck......Hopefully the viper will not go away, I love American sport cars and if SRT wants to compete they need a more affordable viper.......
Viper needs few things right now to sell more. If they care about selling more.
They need auto option like Z06 has and most all high end sports cars now have. Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo, Mercedes. Fact many have no full manual option anymore but I am fine with them offered both like z06 is. Give people a choice.
They need the vert ! Where is the Vert? Should have been out from day one. I like the vert much better than the hardtop. or put in a retractible hartop that would be sweet but pretty heavy and more mechanically complex so ragtop is ok but offer it already!
They should put hill assist in there like in Challengers and new corvettes.
They should consider making a 500 hp entry level viper as said with a nice hemi engine.
I would still like to see the top model with v10 that's one thing that makes viper so cool. A supercharged smaller engine like the z06 just not what would want in the viper. But an entry level car for like 80k with 500 hp could be a good seller. Have the looks and still pretty good power. More than enough for most people for a street car.
They have done fine in the areas of quality, interior especially and the fifth gen is nicely updated. With the touring ride adjustable shock option the car should be pretty liveable as even a daily driver.
I am anxious to test drive a fifth generation and so far only test driven a 2001 second gen and a 2008 fourth gen. Fourth gen was pretty nice but ride was still pretty bad. But fourth gen was pretty fun ,huge power, great handling and braking. And great looking. Real attention getter. Came within inches of buying 2008 snakeskin green one for 60k.
Love that snakeskin green.
If Viper does the above. Offer auto option and convertibles then they should really increase sales. They do still have the SRT model at around 100k . The GTS is bit up there but if they could keep it bit lower its not too bad really. Corvette has big advantage in sales with the base cars being so reasonable. And 100k for z06 is also very reasonable.
And try to get production costs down. No one really cares all that much if the engine or entire car is hand built. All they care about is good quality contruction and quality control. My SL55 has handbuilt and signed engine. My 911 turbo don't think does . My 08 z06 never did. Dont' care much about that. Get costs down.
Again unless they dont' want to sell many and are happy at the low numbers. Most low selling number cars eventually go away. I really want the Viper to stick around.
If they offer an auto /vert will do my part and pick one up..in a few years ..no way would pay new price for any car these days when you can save so much from picking up one used.
The price decrease makes the Viper more attractive. If I could get a GTS at a $35k discount I would seriously consider selling my C7 and getting one.
You can. There have been and are several GTS at 25-35k off sticker. Some owners have been getting some very good deals on left over GTS. I myself was tempted, but I won't give up my ACR for a Gen V.

Dodge I mean SRT makes Vipers only at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, which is about 400,000 square feet compared to 1 million square feet at Bowling Green. Viper builders are, I believe, handpicked very senior UAW members who don't have a lot of automation to help them. So Viper production is never going to be near 22,000 in any year, and if they sold 2,000 they'd be turning backflips.
This brings up the major problem with trying to make the Viper affordable--just a lot of unavoidable fixed costs. It's as if GM had to design and develop Z06s and ZR1s from scratch and then build them in an entirely separate plant. Tough to make a living on 500 cars a year that way almost no matter what you sell them for.
