Default GM Paint Protector

We took delivery of our C7 convertible on Mar 12.

Of course, the finance guy offered us various service options at closing. No high pressure or anything they just offered 4 different plans at 4 different prices. They included things like extended warranty, road hazard protection, loss protection, tire protection and paint/interior protection.

I know that the general impression of these packages is that GM is trying to rip us off and we can get the same thing, cheaper, somewhere else.

I am interested if anyone is familiar with "The Protector" package. This is a treatment that provides protection against paint fading, chalking, loss of gloss, acid rain, bird droppings, tree sap, insect damage, etc. Supposedly you don't need to wax your car, ever, if you have this protection applied. It lasts for 7 years and costs $599.

When I bought my 2008 ZO6 I had a "paint correction" done by a local detailer to smooth out the orange peel inherent in the factory paint job. At that time he recommended a finish coating similar to the GM product. I had him apply this coating to my ZO6, I believe it was $300. I thought that was probably a rip off but wanted to do what I could to keep the car looking nice as long as possible. I'm not much in to waxing and polishing and thought this coating was worth a try.

I've had the ZO6 for 7 years now and the paint still looks good. It shines, there is no damage from the love bugs we have here in Florida and the finish still beads up when I wash it. I've not waxed it since I had this coating applied.

What do you guys think about these products ?

I have not heard of any paint protection from the dealer but I think I have decided to have a detailer apply CQuartz Finest. They do a full correction and then apply the product and it is around $600.00. Maybe all smoke and mirrors but it is supposed to last 2 years so that's about $1.00 per day.

?
GM is not offering this, The Dealer is... In your manual, GM doesn't even recommend sealants. I'd skip. $30+ worth of chemicals that you can do yourself with products available out there...Taking care of paint is no mystery these days and can be made to look excellent for years with a good program of home maintenance/cleaning.

All profit for the dealer...Hardly worth the money

I used to work at a Ford dealership, They also sold this. It's a high priced wax job.

I am not interested in anything the finance guy of a dealership has to say outside of financing.

PLEASEEEE....don't do it...not only is it a product you can buy for less than 100, but it will be applied by a less than sophisticated lot kid that who knows how he's feeling today....

start to investigate the coatings talked about here:

you DIY apply:
Opti Coat 2.0
CQuartz UK

A detailer applies a super version of the above:
Opto Coat Pro
CQuartz Finest....

I say it depends...most might not need it but you will want it if what happened to us happens to your car too. We have a 2011 Chevrolet Volt that the local dealership applied something called Uniseal to it. We didn't want it but All cars at local dealership get this paint protectant applied. One day last year, I noticed tha paint peeling off the roof of the Volt and showed it to my spouse. He hadn't noticed it and took it to the Chevy dealer we bought the car from. He was told they had to get with a Volt representative and took pictures to send to GM regarding our claim.

Called local dealership several weeks in a row and then started calling GM customer service directly. There was always an excuse from customer service ( GM customer service not dealership) why they hadn't called us back. Last August while on vacation, we called GM customer service again and spoke to advisor about our car that had 11,000 miles on it and only 2 years old. I am not kidding but Volt customer service rep. told us that GM denied our paint warranty claim. He said our car was over 12 months old and they only warranted the paint 12 months. We said what are you talking about as it is 3 years 36000 miles warranty. GM rep. Then said they thought paint coming off our Volts roof was caused by acid rain so voided the paint warranty, as we lived in area where refineries are located (thus acid rain possible). ( ALSO told us to look in owners manual about paint..acid rain..)We were in disbelief and Volt advisor said they would have covered it if we had owned car only 11 months( less than a year) but wouldn't pay to have roof repainted as it was over 1 year paint warranty!!!That's when I thought about it and told husband we had Uniseal on the car supposedly protecting the paint. So when we returned from Florida, local dealership called Uniseal representative who took pictures of our Volts roof and they paid to have roof repainted.Uniseal reapplied to the roof of our car so in our case, thankful we had paint protection!

We don't trust GM warranties any longer because of this incident with our Volt( Uniseal rep.didn't think paint peeling was caused by acid rain either FYI). Our GM customer service rep. flat out told us since we live in area where refineries are located and if paint damaged on vehicle year or older then they (GM) won't warrant/ cover paint on the vehicle. Thus, we bought an extended warranty and paint protection on our new Corvette because of what happened regarding our Volt.

If you live in areas that have refineries and have paint problems, don't be surprised if GM says your paint problem is not their problem though your car is still under 3 year 36000 warranty.
