Don't have my C7 yet, but wife's new Impala has the Nav system. Looks like the same as C7. Very nice when you are travelling through bad weather. Shows thunderstorms and such. We were heading to Florida and missed some major weather with simple re-route. Of course, the C7 isn't likely to see major weather of any kind.
But, I was impressed with the new nav compared to the nearly worthless C6 nav. Actually, I had to admit to her how I liked her Impala. Leap forward from her 2010 Impala!! We always had a hand held garmin in the C6 to do REAL routing. IMHO

and the factory NAV can't be switched from car to car so the $800 option was a big no for me. Use it only on trips once or twice a year like Modshack and will not always take the Corvette and spend a fraction of the factory cost.

IMO GM is losing some on not being upgradable, I would imagine the cost between a GPS antenna and non vs NAV HMI module is maybe 50.00.

Do what Chrysler does and let the dealer turn the NAV on for 500.00 if you have an 8.4 equipped car or truck. NAV is a 500.00 option new also, by buying it from the factory you get FM HD and a year of traffic/weather.

Like many I buy cars off the lot, and sometimes they have NAV and sometimes not, be a nice option to have so people can easily add it if they want.

I have used the Onstar turn by turn a few times on this car, you can just call them for directions, upload them to the car with a smartphone or from a PC. While not as nice as a real NAV unit it gets the job done, I think it shows the turns in the HUD, dont remember

For 700 or so for three years its may not be a bad option for non NAV cars, plus you get the other onstar stuff for 3 years. I know a lot of people hate onstar but its an alternative I guess.

For me a Garmin stuffed in the cubby for when I need it plus a smart phone works.

Others are doing this too..My Wife's Mazda CX5 was easily upgraded to integrated factory Nav, with a slip in TomTom module that replaced the Coin tray. All the wiring was already there, install took 5 minutes, $450.

I rarely use the nav but last weekend my wife dragged me onto a house tour thing. 5 different houses all over No. Dallas. Typed each address in and it took me to them with zero fuss. Much easier to use for that kind of thing than the C6 nav was and much, much easier than pulling out a map.

I have seen those and thats pretty cool. I think a few other asian car manufactures do that too.

The Chrysler deal is nice, its a 10 minute software unlock at the dealer. If all the GM cars/trucks that use 8" mylink had all the hardware needed installed for just a simple software NAV unlock the real cost would be next to nothing for the added hardware. Then the first second or third owner could pay for the NAV if they wanted it, its a nice revenue generator that doesnt end at the new car sale for GM.

Most likely it will happen in the next couple years with GM.

There is a post here somewhere where some GM exec said it was possible...the car has everything in it now it needs, just a change in software. Naturally it's gonna be the same price as the option if you ordered it in a new build........

I dunno about that, like the Impalas and trucks supposedly the C7 HMI module carries a nav and non-nav part number.

Since I dont have a parts catalog I cant say for sure but my guess would be if all the other 2014 mylink GM cars/trucks needs hardware so will a corvette. What would be the point of delaying it if all it needed was software, going to be into 2015s soon.

I end up using an I phone rather than my integrated NAV I have ever had in my Nav system. Nav in a car is obsolete almost from the day you buy it.

Plus where I drive my car I see no need for NAV I know all the roads.

Does no one have an Android cell phone with Google maps or are you all still using 1998 style flip phones? That navigation is flawless, and the maps are updated frequently. Simplest solution in the world right there.

Nice idea. Please post pics/description of how you actually mounted it. My Garmin has nothing that will fit into vents.

I used a 17mm Garmin sized ball attached with 3M and a removable Imagnet mount (Amazon) that can hold my Nav, Phone and FRS radio with magnetic plates. You can also just use the ball and clip in the Garmin Cradle. Purely functional with apologies to the style ****'s...

3-4 times a year did not justify that expense for me...or the expensive map updates that you guys will be sucked into paying down the road....Enjoy your "Factory" systems....
So by that logic, if I "rarely" use the passenger seat, should I have it removed?

All kidding aside, you shared your solution, which was a fair one given my original post. But you put your solution out there so you had to know it wasn't going to fly with everyone.

If you are happy with it, thats all that matters. Its your castle!

Default Nav can be added...sort of

I bought a new C7 here in Japan, where customers have few choices. The only selection we had was colors. All options were pre-decided by the powers that be. I guess what we got was 3LT options, but NO nav built-in from Chevy. GM Japan decided to offer a nav system, as an add-on. It is a Panasonic unit in the back of the car, cost $3600, and is fully integrated with the infotainment screen, but does not feed into the HUD. It is controlled by the menu buttons in the car and on-screen menus. So, nav can be added... but it's not perfect.

Interesting! So the directions come through the head unit (above the gear shift) or is the slide down screen completely replaced by the Panasonic unit?

I visited Tokyo on business almost 20 years ago, and I'd love to see a picture of your C7 in Japan.

Here in the states, 3LT comes with NAV Standard, but they may be building them differently for the Japanese / overseas market. I'm curious, could you chose the transmission? If not what is it?

I love my C7 here in Japan! Nearly every car in Japan is white/black/silver so the Torch Red really sticks out here. People must think I'm nuts till they see my face then they realize that I'm a foreigner and they probably understand!!

There are only a few hundred Vettes in the whole country. We pre-ordered in August, and my C7 was delivered a month ago---the first C7 in Japan. About 20 were pre-ordered for the whole country. A Z51 runs about $110K, the base model about $100K (thats full price with tax/delivery, etc). They never made a right-hand drive Vette, so driving it here is a bit strange at first.

Yes, the nav works thru the head unit. The Panasonic unit uses the existing infotainment screen in the Vette, not replacing it with a Panasonic screen.

We could choose Z51 (yes/no), transmission (although in Japan you need a different license for a manual), interior/exterior/caliper colors, seat type, wheel type, roof type but not other options. There was just one level of options which seems to be 3LT without Nav. Then, the Nav was available as an add-on here in Japan by GM Japan which is also what they do with the Cadillacs here. For some reason, the GM nav doesn't work in Japan. In fact, the Nav was an after-thought by GM Japan, not offered when I first ordered then the called me about 6 weeks before delivery and asked if I wanted a Nav system.

I have a picture of it on another page in the forum called "International C7".

I know there is all kinds of cars there, but I was going to say, you must get some looks at that thing in Japan. It's a show stopper here in the US, but most folks know what it is. The attention is almost overwhelming.

I checked it out. Beautiful car! I have almost the identical car but with the black rims. Absolutely love this car! Congrats on being the first in Japan. That is cool for sure.

Thanks.... its such a great car!! Actually, here in Japan, there are essentially no sports cars, so I get plenty of stares based on the color and the fact that its a foreign sports car. I imagine that if I lived in Tokyo, people would be less surprised since there are many foreign cars there. For sure, almost no one knows what it is!!
