I sold my black C6 and bought a gorgeous white C7 convertible! Problem is ... now I want to powder coat my wheels matte black. Any advice on methods of removal of wheels and how some of you stored your C7 while the wheels were being powder coated. I was hoping to find a place that would store that baby up on blocks for me - kind of like "C7 day care" so I wouldn't have to take the wheels off myself and risk damaging the vehicle, but much to my chagrin no businesses are interested in the job. Any suggestions, tips, or lessons learned are much appreciated!
If the car has enough clearance with the suspension (I don’t know if it does), you could jack the car up, remove the wheels and lower the car back down with the brake rotors resting on 4X4 blocks of lumber, 6X6 if you wanted more room for the jack etc. Don
Not a bad suggestion above, but I'd do it a slightly different way.
Depending on if the car has to remain outside or inside, get a cheap car cover if outside, four jack stands, one hydraulic jack and lifting pucks. Jack it up with the hydraulic jack using the jacking pucks, put the four stands under each point, take off the wheels, and put car cover on and secure it under the car so it doesn't blow off. Reverse the order when you get the wheels back from powder coating.
Now, you'll have the equipment to do other work on the car should you ever want to.
If that's not to your liking, look up the Corvette club in Tulsa and ask them for advice on where to go.
I have a question about this, not to step on the OP or change direction of the thread but it's in the same spirit of things.
Is powdercoating something that is recommended when a wheel is new, or is it ok (or even common) to do it once you've got quite a bit of wear and tear on a wheel and do not want to repaint it? Or does it not matter at all?
I've got black rims on mine and after reading various threads assume that they're not gonna be looking their best after a while. If anyone has insight on how powder coating wears and tears compared to paint, i'd love to hear more about that, too. If it's much lower maintenance than the normal paint, it might be something that I consider.
