Nowhere in that letter does it say that they are going to disable it. On the contrary, they specifically mention the audio recording. It sounds to me that they are just going to disable the audio portion of the valet mode.
Perhaps they will introduce a voice notification to the valet in the update (which would make sense)- something to the effect that the Valet recording function is operating and their voice and driving is being recorded. (in essence saying - "Behave Yourself").
Okay if they were just going to do what you guys are saying why not spell it out? To keep everyone from wondering my bud says he's staying away from dealer.

Probably because they don't know exactly what it will be at this point. I suspect they are running different alternatives past internal and external legal council to see what can be done to meet applicable laws.
Certainly nobody on this forum knows what they will wind up doing, we are just giving our opinions what might happen.
My expectation is that this is surrounding the "reasonable expectation of privacy" that one would have being inside of a vehicle and the unlawful nature of recording (audio) without prior knowledge or consent.
I don't think that they are going to disable Valet mode, I suspect that they are simply going to put a message up on the screen when the car is put in to Valet mode notifying the occupants that the car is recording video and audio of their actions.
This should take care of privacy concerns and notifications.

Talon,
I sure hope you are right. It is a great feature and I would hate to see it removed in the interest of protecting an unscrupulous valet. A message on the screen would be the notification. If they don't consent, they need to get out of the car!

I called GM and told them I will not except any update that removes this feature unless I get a refund for part of the Nav./PDR
everyone needs to call GM and voice your displeasure.
I would never use a valet but I planned on using it at the dealer but I needed to check it out. If I put it in valet mode before I get inside the dealer, then pull in and turn off the engine, will the valet come back on when the car is started? I haven't checked that out yet, but this update will also pertain to the dealer also, unless it turns off when the engine is turned off. I don't think its anyones business, it's MY car.

I'm guessing the dealer will know how to bypass it and shut it off.

I would think you have a very valid point in that GM had a commercial about the valet mode which could have influenced one's purchase and now they could be taking away part of that feature- one could make a very strong argument for a partial refund.
All GM needs to do is put the message on the screen requiring a verbal acceptance if the YES button is pressed. This way the owner will not be able to bypass the screen by just pressing the YES button.
