After losing my key (in an embarrassing fashion that we won't go into here), I learned the following. For the C7, GM took away the possibility of a dealer cutting your new metal key to fit inside the fob. The precut key must be ordered from GM directly, by your dealer after extensive verification of car ownership.
You certainly can order the fob itself from an outside source and you can even program it to your car without a lot of difficulty using a rather arcane and silly technique (incidentally, requiring the metal key inserted into the lock above the license plate). But, if you want the fob and the metallic key, it's going to cost you.

Thanks for your detail post.
My son in college had the same happened to his Ford. Will cost over $200 to get replacement FOB/Key from dealer. But he bought a 3rd replacement key online for less than $30, & it can only be programed if you still have the first 2 FOB/Key. He can't program his 3rd replacement without having orig 2 keys. Of course, 2 months after he bought 3rd key, he lost one orig key. He's in process of ordering another 4th replacement key... he says cheap insurance.
OK, so we buy the key directly from GM (thru dealer?) & can buy the FOB on our own?
Would you believe I lost one of my keys a few weeks ago. 95% chance it's somewhere in my house, but I can't find it! Tore the house upside down, room by room, no key!
I expect that I had it in my pocket and I said, "I 'd better put his away for now, somewhere where I won't lose it!".. and the proceeded to store it someplace nice and safe - so safe that I can't find it!
I can guarantee that I will find it right after I order a new one!

The good news: the C7 doesn't go out in our New England winters, so I really don't need the key until spring!
If you have a button on your fob that blows the horn to find your car, maybe they should put a button in the car that makes the fob beep so you can find your fob!
Make an offer on the new OEM C7 fob / transmitter I have for sale....the fob does not have remote start.
No reasonable offer will be refused.
These sell for $200+ at stealership.
I bought a Camaro switchblade fob for $18 on e-bay and had it programmed. It was much cheaper than buying from GM. The fob might be available for the C7 too.
