Most of the start / stop / reset timer functions are in the right side menu. Try the right arrow on the steering wheel controls to see them. (That's where the 0 - 60 timer controls are).
ah! I see it. to start it, you have to go to the timer menu in track gauge to start it. I figured since it was visible there, you can start it from there
