I seldom have any problems with people jacking with me when I'm driving my Z06. You get a few, but if you watch them, they do it to every car they meet up with. I do get a lot more crap from drivers that must feel that I stole the money to buy my Mercedes from their sick grandmother that needs a cancer operation. Some people really do hate people that they believe are rich(I'm not, but I like to drive nice cars) and believe that the reason they don't have anything to show for the time they have been on this planet is because I somehow stole it from them.
I would've done the exact same thing the op did. I don't care why he was tailgating or if I'm being allegedly baited into something. Sometimes you just gotta unleash the beast. And I'd rather not drive in the company of someone who could rearend me at any moment.
You all realize there are mentally unstable wackos that have licenses. Right?
So anything that might turn the wacko **** up a bit can be a huge loss for you, your passengers and those you leave behind. I've seen it happen more often that I care to remember. They usually have nothing to lose....

Here too, Joe. I don't have any problems either. Don't know why it bothers them so much, but it does.
Driving as if in a drag race or street racing seems to solve problems they're having in traffic with others.
As I got older, I realized the best thing is to move over and let them pass. Anyone who tails someone is a nut, and the less interactions you have with a nut the better off you are.
I use to drive with my older brother who had a 911C4. He would outrun anyone who egged him on. I kept telling him that is all good to go fast now and then but that he should determine when and where it was safe to do so not some wingnut in a civic with a load exhaust.
For one, a lot of Corvette owners think they are being tailgated when it's the normal following distance of many. Remember, you're sitting in a vehicle with not much behind you -a 2 seater with not much rear overhang. Hop in your pickup and that same person behind you is following at the same distance from the rear bumper but you don't get the feeling of being tailgated because they are following further behind your seating position. And they aren't filling up your mirrors like your low and short Corvette.
Shoot, everthing I drive gets someone wanting to play. My 32 has a chute and wheelie bars, my 67 has 22.5" wide rear tires and sits lower than my lowered Mustang, my Mustang is a supercharged Roush and it is a lets race target and finally my diesel truck is a target for all the diesel dudes with tuners that obliterate the road with smoke when they jump on it. I'll just give them a thumbs up and smile.
The last time some a-hole did that to me I flipped on the hazard flashers to call EVERYONE'S attention to the idiot tailgater. I was amazed how quickly the cowboy backed off.
If road conditions allow, I normally pull over and let them pass, not worth the trouble, aggravation, and in the world, I trust nobody. If its two lane or more I simply pull over to the travel lane and just cruise, let them go. Found as I got older, not our on a racetrack, just enjoy my Corvette, and the drive I get. LET THEM GO, why waste the effort and the gas....
For tailgaters, if the situation warrants (meaning if safe) I downshift 1 gear with the paddles. That ever so subtly slows the car down 1-2 mph for a second, then I give it some throttle to quickly widen the gap to a normal distance between my car and the tailgater behind me. Then resume the same speed I was going before. If they creep back up too close again, then I repeat until they get the hint.
Cops can show an 'exhibition of speed' where the non-LE cannot. He was obviously trying to get somewhere quickly, and showed restraint until he could open it up. Unless you knew the where and why, I'd cut him a break on it.
So many possibilities here. Maybe he was a dick......far more likely he needed to get somewhere quick and for a variety of possible reasons the situation didn't warrant lights/siren. Unless he pulled into the local coffee shop 30 seconds later, I'd give him the benefit of a doubt.
