Default Oil

So I'm reading this thread on the blown engine.. GM stated that the owner didn't follow "Protocal" per the manual. So I opened mine and on Page 9-6 under Track Events and Competitive driving :
"Caution: Not changing the engine oil to 15W-50 may cause engine damage. Engine oil MUST be changed to 15W50 synthetic.

This makes me think it is a waste of time to try to run dexos 5w30.

Sounds like for daily driving it should at least be 0w40 and possibly 15w50.

The rest is for marketing and fuel economy..

IMHO, GM designed, built and warranted the engine, so I follow their instructions..........especially under warranty.

5W-30 is not a waste for street driving. The lower winter viscosity is better on start-up than 15W oil. Since this is when most engine wear occurs, 5w works. The lower operating temp viscosity, the 30 weight, also works better @ street temps/normal operating temps. The 50w helps when oil temps creep into the 270* and above range but this should rarely if ever be seen on the street.

On my C6, I use a 10W-30 when ambient temps are below 65*. Above that for the track, I will switch to a 5w-40. If engine temps get to 280*+, in goes the 15w-50.

The owner’s manual is very clear that 5W-30 is the only grade of oil they specify for daily driving. Don
