You would think that after spending this kind of money on a car that the map updates would be provided at least through the warranty period. They could be downloadable with the entry of a VIN or maybe sold for the price of just the stick device with S&H. IMHO anyway.
Something I have been thinking for would be a great feature is if there were a way to do blue tooth screen sharing. I'm imagining something just like blue tooth streaming audio but streaming the phone's display instead.
Then the electronics in the car could be more or less a dumb terminal that just has to display whatever is on the phone's screen or play whatever audio the phone is playing. It works with Pandora. I have XM radio in my truck with "listen anywere" so I could already stream XM radio from the app on my phone to the car's system. Imagine if I could do the same with Google maps and navigation?
I already have a miniature computer I carry around with me that has access to pretty much the whole world via an always on internet connection. Also I will probably have this car for at least 15 years or even more; over which time many many phones would have come and gone. So If the car just had to stream the screen from the phone my car electronics would be always "up to date".
Of course this isn't likely to happen anytime soon because the manufactures make too much money on the electronics packages. Used to have a Ford and at one point read a hacker article where the guy had taken apart his Ford Sync system to see what components were in there. Basically he concluded that he could buy all the component parts other than the screen for around $50....then think about what Ford actually sells that for.

What your are describing is essentially Apple CarPlay and Android's version. It isn't quite a dumb terminal but pretty close. It uses your phone as the computer.

Hmmmm...since I plan to keep the car for a very long time, I guess at some point when I decide the built in stuff is too obsolete to continue there may be something along these lines in my future:
If I wait five years or so and don't bother with the GM updates I'l save enough money to buy one and by then the technology will have advanced a long way.

INFO.TXT Printout, from New Thumb Drive I just got as the 2016 UPDATE
Gave up on the Corvette Nav a few years ago. Got myself a Garmin and get FREE lifetime maps, and traffic alerts. Just keep moving it from car to car. Problem solved.
Guess what I got today in the mail FOR FREE? Two brand new Navigation upgrades for my wife's 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe and my 2113 Hyundai Veloster. Now that is customer satisfaction.
I have factory nav systems in my stuff. Is it the best? No, but I am not going have some tacky add-on hanging on my windshields or off the dashboards somewhere. They work for me. In the past, I've swapped rides so often, the updates were no concern. Now I will be hanging onto vehicles longer, so I will buy updates every couple years or so. The updates cost less than what I pay to fill up my diesel truck twice, so no really big deal.

Guess what? You paid for that update in the purchase price of the cars. Trust me they weren't "free".
