Default Wheel Locks

New C7 Z51 owner and I want to install the GM wheel locks on my car. My question is do you feel it's ok to remove one wheel lug while the car on on the ground or does the car need to be raised? Any helpful advise would be appreciated.

You are most likely going to get yes and no answers to this. I have removed and replaced one lug at a time to replace all five lugs without any problems for years. My guess is that the "correct" way is to jack the car.

Agreed. I'm sure you're fine to do it on the ground, but the 'correct' way is undoubtedly to raise it and re-tighten.

No need to raise car if only doing one wheel lug.

I installed one lock per wheel with the car on the ground, then properly torqued all 5 to spec.

Thank you all for your responses. I feel better now about doing this. Does anyone know the proper torque for the lug nuts? I have not had a chance to check the manual.

So... Does anyone have a thought on the security offered with the spline style lug nuts?

Some people call them locking lugs, but since the splines are all the same and therefore not really "keyed", they aren't really locking lugs. With that said, I have not heard of anyone using spline style lugs having their wheels stolen.

I ask because I am looking for lug nuts in either black or red, and the spline style are a lot cheaper (3:1) than true locking lugs. call me thrifty.

100 lb-ft

The splined lug nuts are probably only slightly better than no locks since professional wheel thieves are likely to carry the spline tool.

If you get the splined nuts, buy a set of 4 Gorilla locks. They look like splined nuts but are keyed with one or more splines out of sequence.

In watching the Atlanta 500 last week, nascar rules say that a car can go out on the track with only 3 lug nuts on.
Not me......

+1. wheels not going to move if you're only taking one off. I am sure you will get some conflicting opinions regardless.

My C7 is coming with Black Machined Faced Aluminum wheels. Does anyone know if the lugs are black or are they chrome?

Consider it this way. If you remove one lug nut and the wheel moves on the other 4 lugs (at all), the other four lugs weren't tight. My thought is, you shouldn't have any issue removing and replacing one lug.
