Picked up my new '15 Torch Red convertible, Z51, last Wednesday. It's an automatic, and I experienced what I think is a bit weird when I drove it off the lot. First, I loved the sound when starting up. Problem is when it shifted into 3rd or 4th, the NPP shut off. When that sound went away I wasn't happy. First, is this normal?? Then if it is, why?? I want to hear my exhaust all the time so this is very disappointing.
This replaced a 2011 Grand Sport with NPP, and it was easy to just install a mild to wild. Best of both worlds. On for me...............off for my wife. So last question is there a similar fix for the C7?? I was thinking of just trying out the mild to wild from the GS, but thought I'd find out what you all think.
By the way, I think the C7 is an absolutely phenominal car. Love the way it rides and drives, and of course it's absolutely beautiful

Thanks for any help. Stan
Yes it's normal, more than likely it went into V4 mode and that shuts down the sound, if you want to stay in V8 mode you will need to run in manual. Why they designed the Auto this way and not like the manual is beyond me but that's the way it is. You can display what mode you are in on the DIC and the V8 mode is in Orange, the V4 mode is in Green. When taking off in Drive it will be in V8 mode and if it detects easy normal driving it will go to V4 as required till you get on it or physically go to the manual mode.
Whit that said the are great cars and around town I don't need to hear the exhaust, even though it dose sound good.
Yeah this is the AFM (Active Fuel Management) kicking in. There's a device called the Range AFM disabler that is available to defeat this. I don't have any personal experience with it but owners seem happy.
When I get my C7 I may buy one if the AFM bugs me.
Mine will not allow the exhaust to be open in V4 (AFM) mode, but it will also close when different gears engage, which one depending on the mode selected. You can set three parameters of the Driving Mode in the Settings section: Engine Sound Mgt. (exhaust), cluster display, and steering. For example, I have exhaust set to Sport on mine, so it stays there regardless of which Driving Mode is selected.
How long it stays open (loud) and under what conditions the flaps close depends on the mode. The only difference I've noticed between Sport and Track mode is that the flaps close (quiet) when the A8 shifts into fourth gear for Sport and fifth gear for Track. Also, mine is quiet in all modes at idle except Sport and Track. If you want the exhaust flaps to stay open all the time just pull the NPP fuse (#41 for 2014, #42 for 2015), but it will drone at cruising speeds. I haven't tried it but know this would grate on my nerves in short order.
Buy a Diablo intune hand held unit and you can shut off the 4 cyl mode. I hate the 4 cyl mode. I bought a vette not a civic. I have 1 for sale in used parts if anyone wants it

I have the #42 fuse pulled and have had it this way for quite some time. I also have an A8. I don't think there is really too much drone at cruising speeds, but; What is really annoying is the AFM valves opening and closing all the time. During a long road trip a couple months ago I just drove in "manual mode" and the exhaust sounded fine until I got into hilly/mountain area and the car kind of lugged a little in 8th going uphill at 60/65. I started using paddles to drop a gear. Finally at a gas stop I just gave up and put the fuse back in and set the sound to Track and drove the rest of the trip. All in all, my opinion; Fuse out around town and for a little spirited driving it works great. On long highway trips with the A8; it sucks. I'm aware of the tune trim that shuts off the AFM, but just don't want to screw with it and the unintended problems that may come up.

Trust me I am the same way but I did my homework and talked to the best tuners and even GM people. It's a simple on and off. All your doing is turning that feauture off. No harm can come and actually logically I would think the NOT changing back and forth from v8 to v4 in the long run is easier on the engine. Vettes have survived for a longggggg time with no 4 cyl mode and ours will too
It was done to avoid the highway drone with this exhaust, personally I prefer it this way but to each their own. My last sports car had a high performance exhaust and the drown at highway speed got old pretty quick. Great around town but not what I want to hear at cruise speeds hour after hour.
Just an FYI - AutoAnything.com has 20% off the Range Technology AFM disabler . I had to call them because their ordering system rejected the discount code , but they honored it. So for under 160.00 shipped to your door, the problem is solved.
