The YOUNGER Corvette owners < 50 years old, tend to drive them hard but not too hard. The < 40 crowd tends to drive them even harder and if someone is lucky to own one while they are in their 20's and 30's, look out.

The RENTAL Corvettes are driven very hard. They get abused by everyone who rents them.

When you OWN a car like that you will take care of it. When you RENT a car like that you beat on it like there is no tomorrow.
Thats some serious sterotyping there Junior member,

Why would anyone buy a rental Corvette? I mean its not like there are no used C7s for sale, right? A few years back I rented a Hertz Edition C6 on three different occasions. Cosmetically, the Cars were in well below average shape. God only knows what was going on under the hood.

I have been a car salesman in the past and we would have to tell the customer if it was a taxi, rental car, police car, salvage... Most rental car company's well keep the best for sale and wholesale the others. I would think you would have to get it way back of book if you wanted to buy one.

"Stereotyping"

It's called generally speaking. This whole political correctness thing is getting to be too much. Everyone gets offended for the slightest thing. It's complete madness.

The real question for ED is, is this for resale or personal use? It's not as if the OP doesn't have the ability and facility to check out the car and repair it if needed. If for resale, some additional maintenance and possibly some cosmetic/detailing and it's a go. For personal use, just expect the unexpected because I agree w. those who say it was taken out to "try it out." And to a renter, that means anything goes with the car.

As to dvillin's comment ("I would say most Corvettes are driven hard as they are designed to do."), I believe this was related to his first sentence about the rental car being checked out AND the fact it's a rental car---not to every single C7 sold, or even most. Except for a few who drive it "a quarter mile at a time" and accumulate a total of 5K miles that way, many/most of the low-mileage Vettes do not see continuous hard use.

A car out of service is lost $$ so they would just reset the DIC and do the oil change whenever the car was not returned

WOT on cold engines, donuts in parking lots, curb rash, smoking inside the car, spilled food/drinks, bottoming out, John Force burnouts, etc.

The rental cars get really cleaned out and a fluid change PRIOR to being sold on the open market. Unless you do cylinder leak down tests and major drivetrain inspections, you can't tell how rough these cars were driven and maintained.

With that being said, I would NEVER buy a rental Vette. People drive and beat the car like it is stolen.

This is a rental Vette and this act is done dozens of times over the course of its rental life:
Too many other Vettes out there for the potential risk with a rental. No way IMO. Find one of the other thousands out there.

I am in my 20's with a C7. I drive it hard sometimes, but nothing the car wasn't built to handle. I've had it to the track and will many times in the future. I do however, maintain it extremely well and take very good care of it. But this thing wasn't meant to sit in a garage with super low milage all its life. I get out and drive the damn thing like a sports car is supposed to.

Why on earth would anyone consider a used rental? They are known to be THE most abused vechicles on the road after taxis and police cars.
Seriously, IF there is a savings of a few hundred dollars purchasing a rental vs a private sale, you are playing a expensive game of roulette.
RUN away from a rental...

Over the years I have had good experiences with several family DD that were rentals. Good purchase price and reliable. Put 160k on one with no repairs whatsoever.

Would NOT buy a Corvette rental however.

Here is the story. One of my close friends owns a Chevrolet dealership. I wasn't really looking to update my Corvette but a guy in my Corvette club has a 12 Carlisle blue convertible for sale. I am thinking about buy it. My friend said to me what don't you just buy a C7 and get the newest technology.

So I was looking in his inventory and he had a 14 torch red 1LT coupe NPP, Chrome Wheels, automatic with 1,000 miles on it. He sold it new to a 75 year old man and traded back in.

So I called him to buy the car and they just took a deposit on it. They also have a Cyber Gray 3LT Z-51 coupe loaded 7 speed red interior with 3K miles. I don't know if I would like the stick. They have a yellow 14 3LT automatic, glass top, npp, navigation, yellow calipers, comp seats, black stinger with 13K miles. I like the color and equipment. The Carfax report shows it as being put in service on 4-27-14 as a rental. They bought it in June at a GM sale.

The car is very nice and has no paint work. Then I saw the Hertz Plaque on the dash. I didn't know they were doing them again. I did a search and found out Hertz was doing yellow and silver coupes.

I know the C6 Hertz cars were beat to death. Hertz left them in service for a few years and most came back in with miles from 35-50K

Would I but this car? I don't think so!!!

Definitely not all Shelby Rent-a-Racers have appreciated in value. Some were totaled, others sent to the crusher, and some left to rot to rust. In fact, only a small percentage of manufactured rent-a-racers have survived today.

The ones that are still around though, if in decent condition, have appreciated nicely.

Check it out thoroughly, get the VIN and take it to a dealer to get the service records and see if there is a warranty block on it. I've heard on here the track cars get an automatic warranty block on the drive train, don't think that is the case here, but good to check and get anything in writing about the factory warranty (if it still exists).

I would argue that all that sitting is worse on a car than one that is run hard. Corvette's are a purpose built car and meant to be driven. And there is a big difference between run hard and abused and I think some people here don't understand that.

That said, with so many C7's out there I would not buy a used rental unless it was significantly discounted and still had a warranty.
