Default Strange Behaviour with A6

I normally pass by flooring the gas and do not use the paddle shifters. This results in excellent speed and noise, both of which are great. Yesterday I thought I should perhaps start using the paddles to pass. I was in Sport mode with a 2014 A6. To pass I dropped down 2 gears to 4th and accelerated somewhat aggressively, but did not floor it. As I got along side the car which I was passing my car seemed as though it dropped into 4 cylinders. I am not saying that is what happened because I did not verify that by looking at the instrument paddle. But the power dropped off and the sound dropped off. I had enough speed to continue passing but if traffic was heavy I would have had to drop back (embarrassing in a C7). After the pass I felt the car go into automatic and everything seemed okay. I formerly drove a standard so I thought the paddles would function the same. I suppose I should try the paddles when I have no traffic to get used to using them. Any ideas on what was happening? Anyone else noticed the same behaviour with their A6 or A8?
