Default Windshield stone chip

New C7 1400 miles picked up a dime sized stone chip passenger side windscreen while on I95. Can probably be repaired however due to the vehicle being new I am leaning towards a replacement which of course is several hundred dollars more than a repair. Just looking for any comments on which way to go fix or replace. Thanks

I'd go for the fix. With today's glass repair capabilities it will be virtually unnoticeable. Plus, it's covered by most insurance companies with no out-of-pocket expense.

If that is not satisfactory, you can always spring for the replacement.

I actually fixed one about that size myself. Used the Rain-X kit. Pretty simple actually and it totally disappeared. There are DIY videos on you tube. And the difference in cost could be as much as $1,000.

With the C6, used Safelite thru my insurance company. Fix was totally unnoticeable. Twice on 2 different C6s.
Plus they come right to your home, very convenient and professionally done.

Repaired dime sized chip on outer layer only with an O'Reilly kit.
Shop wanted $100.
Hardly noticeable.

I owned my car for literally 10 minutes (26 mi.) and I picked up a chip the size of yours. Don't replace the window unless you have to. This isn't an easy task. You always have that option if the repair doesn't work out.

Your insurance should do it for free. No deductible. Have them repair not replace. You won't notice it. Even it needs to be replaced, there shouldn't be any charge.

Most insurance companies cover repairs by places like Safelite. I'd get it fixed if repairable.

My chip quickly spread to a long crack within 10 miles so I had to replace and it cost me my 500 deductible. I then changed my comprehensive deductible to 0 for and additional 200 bucks a year. That's for 4 cars.

We have deer every where as well where I live. I've had a few close calls over the years with deer jumping out in front of me.

I had a dime size chip on the passenger side glass of my C7, I heard the hit but did not see the chip until that evening in my garage. Fortunately, it had not spread, called my State Farm insurance agent first thing the next day, repair truck was out to my home within a couple of hours, at no charge to me. Only evidence of the repair is a tiny blemish where the chip used to be, very happy with the repair results.

A dime sized chip seems a bit large and will most likely spread from vibration. If you have "full glass coverage" they will replace it, using a certified GM part, for free. Full price is $1,400+. I used a local glass shop which State Farm recommended and it came out perfect. Just be careful of the electronics on the top of the roofline and it should be fine. I posted some pictures of mine below. Good luck. PS...I already have another chip in the new windshield but it is minuscule so I am waiting a bit to have it replaced again.

A dime sized chip is well within the sizes that can be repaired. The key is to do it before any cracks appear. Once cracks develop, repair is not possible. Also not possible if it is near the edge of the glass.

Unless you have crappy insurance windshield glass replacement is free....one per year for some policies....

Replace it because you will never not be able to look at it..no matter how good it is it won't be perfect.

I've repaired more than one windshield that way.

A friend of mine has been trying to get his windshield replaced in his 2014 Convertible but has had a terrible time doing so. Safelite couldn't get the correct windshield (HUD display) so he then took the car to his dealer to see if they could help. They couldn't get a windshield either. Last I heard (last week), they told him they will have to pull a windshield off the assembly line.

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate it. I have decided to go with the replacement. I am very **** when it comes to my cars and due to the car being virtually brand new, I would be very dissatisfied with even a slight blemish. Waiting for it to arrive at the glass shop

Good decision. Why settle for a blemished windshield on a $70K+ car when you can have a new, genuine GM windshield. Good luck.

[QUOTE=waunavet;1590296603] I picked up a chip the size of yours. Don't replace the window unless you have to. This isn't an easy task.

Went thru this with an '02 MB CL500 that I bought back then. Practically everyone told me "don't mess with that factory sealed windshield. I had it patched and I'd say I was the only one who noticed it and that's because I knew it was there. Even when I traded it in, the dealer never caught it. (And they don't miss much).

Safelite. They did a stone chip on mine. Didn't cost a thing. The tech said it was very shallow and did what he described as a pit fill. He said it wasn't worth turning into the insurance company. Just asked if he could take a few pics of the car sense it was his first C7 Vette he'd got to work on.
