From what I am reading this must be a common trait. When my 2016 A8 makes its first 1-2 shift from a cold start the shift is delayed, with high rpm, and then a very hard hit into 2nd. After that it is normal. Some have mentioned a dealer visit fix and others have said it has cleared up on its own after so many miles. Please relate your experience if it fixed itself. How many miles, did it gradually get better or self correct quickly, did it stay fixed or default back, etc.?
My car exhibited this trait the first 2-3 times I drove it but it has not recurred. I took a long road trip of about 800 miles and car now has 1200 miles.
I have 4,000 miles. I can't remember for sure, it was March and a bit cool, but it happened early on a few times. I don't recall it happening in the last few months.
I do note that putting it in Drive when cold, better to wait about 30 seconds for the RPMs to drop to 1000, otherwise get a hard shift into Drive.
I have noticed it just a tiny little bit... I just drive the car with gentle throttle for a few minutes until it warms up... so far the A8 has impressed me with its responsiveness and smoothness... a total non-issue IMHO.
Yes, 1-2 shift is delayed until the engine warms up a bit. Seems to go away after a mile or two. Very consistent. Seems to be the nature of the beast for mine.
There was a TSB on this for the 2015 model. Dealer fixed mine. No more hard 1-2 shifts which usually occurred in slow moving traffic. Almost like someone hit me from behind.
Mine with a 12/18/14 build date never had the 1-2 hard-shift problem, but flared a bit from 1-2 for the first shift when cold for the first month or two. Since then that shift is still a bit soft but not bad enough to take it to the dealer for a software update. No other A8 issues in the past two months, so I assume it's finishing up its adaptive learning process.

Mine was built 8/14 and now has 370 miles. It does not exhibit this characteristic. But what I just discovered is when manually downshifting to third, second and first, it rev matches. Very cool!

Didn't know it would do that. Will try it out at next opportunity.

My 2015 does it sometimes as well, The dealer said all of the TSB's are done for my car. If I just give it a few second when backing out it seems to be fine.
