I know its similar to powder coating, have read not to use wheel cleaner on it which makes me wonder about durability. I would like to get a different finish on my base silver wheels.
I kinda like the black chrome look too. I found one place that had a price of $185 per rim + $100 stripping charge. That was for standard rims though, plus it takes 4-8 weeks and they have your rims. I was too lazy to call them though.
yea... If it was $285x4 that might be a bit much. Looking at all the little rock chips on my wheels after only 3800 miles has me thinking about what to do when they start looking beat up
Add: Here's a pic of the black chrome on Z51 wheels. Not too shabby. Was having trouble resizing the pic with the Windows 10 paint app, so I hacked off the ends to keep the size reasonable. You get the idea:

Reason: I can't decide what to eat for dinner but I'm thinking tacos...
I'm liking those too, that looks good. For me to ship, be without rims, coat and ship back, new might be a better option. I'll call my local powder coater maybe they can do it or know someone closer. I'd like to see them too, I could see those looking really different in person.
Oh well, one more thing I'll probably get to in a year.
I have two sets of OEM chromed PVD wheels on two cars for winter use. The Lexus dealer did one set at a cheap supplier and it's flaking off (red undercoat) this set is 5 seasons old. My other set was done thru Discount Tire for a great price. Behind the chips I can see a black undercoat (quality supplier). This set is 3 seasons old and are holding up much better.
Yes, they both have rock chips. Yes, they do scratch. Yes, a miss aimed socket will chip the edge of the lug nut hole. Think of it as car paint.
I had a previous set of winter use rims powder coated and they held up great for the 15 years I used them.
PVD is used for many things, and like most have said, you do have to be a bit more careful than with powder coated products. I had black chrome on my car for seven plus years. No wheel cleaners, gritty stuff, etc. Detroit Wheel is I believe owned by Joe (can't recall his last name; had comm. with him several years ago). If you want another vendor, you can try CalChrome Wheels (Calchrome.com) and talk with John's people---see their page on finishes and "black chrome". They are also very good, and their shipping methods are really good (whole page on website).
Thanks for the reminder. I'm looking to have them redo mine with their combo PVD/Powdercoat process. I purchased a set of Chromed OEM rims from them earlier this year and they are beautiful. I paid more then the ebay merchants but I got top knoch results!
