Default Backup camera guidelines

No, not guidelines on how to use the backup camera. If you need help with that, you probably shouldn't be driving a Corvette.

But some may not know that the image from the backup camera can be set to show lines on the screen that indicate how much space there is between you and an object behind. On my '15, the guidelines were turned off by default. If yours aren't on, you can turn them on on the infotainment screen:

The RVC system may have a guidance line overlay that can help the driver align the vehicle when backing into a parking spot. To turn the guidance lines on or off:
  1. On the infotainment system, press the Settings screen button, or turn the MENU **** to highlight Settings and press MENU.
  2. Select Rear Camera.
  3. Select Guidance Lines and then select Off or On
Now that they're on, you'll notice a series of orange lines at progressively greater distances behind the car. Closest to the car are two very short lines at the left and right edges of the car. I'm not sure why these are so short, but they indicate a position about 1 foot behind the rear bumper.

Further back, the first full width line is about 35" behind the rear bumper.

The next line is about 82" behind the car.

These distances may vary slightly from car to car, depending on the alignment of the camera. I didn't bother to measure any further than these two lines, as I don't really care what's 10 or 12 feet back when I'm in reverse.

that is helpful. Much better than "read the manual".

Well, what I quoted came directly from the manual, and manuals are available online, linked from this thread:

So no excuse for not reading the manual.

Caution the lines are a guide not a guarantee you will not scrub a curb if parking in a spot that has curbs on each side.

The backup camera guidelines appear to be much more accurate as to the width of the car than the front parking cameras.

I am having a tough time figuring out distance and width on the front cameras. Does anyone have any tips for these?

I don't know about you but I don't and can't look at the dash when backing up, I look at the mirrors, I turn around, generally I'm too busy watching garage walls to use a camera.

I did find it sort of handy when I was in my garage, already in my parking spot, to not touch the bumper on my parts cabinet that is directly behind my parking spot.

That so far is the only use I found for the backup camera, I have had a backup cameras on a few cars since 2013.

I would switch them off if I could.

The NHTSA regulation that mandates "rear visual aids" for all cars manufactured after May 1st 2018 came about as the result of a guy backing over his small child with his SUV. Even though I don't have kids, we have plenty in the cul-de-sac on skate boards, bikes, roller blades etc. My pickup truck and my C7 both have the same issue that someone small like a kid who is also close in to the back of the vehicle will be invisible or marginally visible. This has come up elsewhere but I wish GM would go a step further and put the rear sonar on the C7 like my truck has. I can site specific instances where the beep on my truck saved me from backing into a kid. So....I find them useful and would not turn it off.

They are good for checking that you have pulled far enough into the garage for the garage door to close (if you park nose in, that is).

I find it handy when backing into a space to make sure I'm in far enough, and not going to hit the wall / post / curb / whatever else is back there. Also when backing out of spaces parking garages with narrow lanes. Not mandatory, but definitely helpful.
