Default Oil consumption UPDATE

My dealer confirmed today what I already knew, I'm loosing ~1.5q/2000 miles. The dealer states GM allows for 1q/2000 so I'm a bit out of spec. The GM technical assistance center is to be contacted Monday for advice and how they'd like the dealer to proceed. Hopefully I'm not in for an invasive tear-down. Honestly, I think I'd just decline that, add oil as needed and dump the car before the warranty expires. I'll update as this plays out.

UPDATE 10/8/15
Official word from GM tech center is to keep monitoring. I'll be visiting my dealer every 2000 miles for level check...glad they're close.

If you "dump" the car, one would hope that you are up front and inform the dealer or even more importantly, a private buyer of the amount of oil consumption the car has. Not doing so would be unethical in my view. Don

Is this why there are so many low milage 2014-2015 Vettes available out there for sale? Or is this an older Vette?

Of course I would. And it's not necessarily a ticking time bomb. I've had other cars that consumed oil that ran like a top. Many cars burn oil, it's not unusual. The car may very well live out its life with nary a problem related to this.

So it's under warranty still? Why not just repair and drive? Dropping/replacing engine a no-go?

Glad to read your post and I agree some cars run quite well while consuming oil. I just think any buyer deserves to know all the details before making a choice on a significant purchase. Don

All options are on the table as we await guidance from GM. I'm just not keen on tear-down or replacement for something that may be an innocuous "problem." That said, I'll likely do as they suggest. We'll see.

They won't pull apart the engine, they will put an entire new engine in it, then take your old one apart to see what caused the problem.

Good luck with whatever happens. My '00 was consuming a quart every 1200 miles and GM did replace the rings. Never had a problem after that.

dealer wont rework an engine that's for sure they will swap it out with a long block. seems there are some places I would look first to get a clue as to where the oil is going. I assume they pulled the intake to inspect for oil in it or at least pulled the throttlebody and shined a light in there?
On a lot of these the pcv system can "suck" a little hard and pull oil into the intake. If its not blowing straight out the pipe noticeably then I would look at the vent pcv system for clues. The passages could have been overbored or the pcv could be missing all together.

One thing is for sure If it was out of warranty they would try and sell you a new engine, if its still "IN" warranty then they will say its acceptable........ funny how that works. I would venture they will come back and tell you its within guidelines. I would tell them then that with 5000 mile oil changes I'm gonna run this thing out of oil.... What they should do is put in a new engine. for what all that info is worth I don't know, lol. hope it works out, paul

Burning that much oil will cause the plugs to foul much short of their expected life and will probably foul up the cats early as well.

Luck of the draw maybe. I have never needed to add oil to my late build 2014. 13k miles now.

[QUOTE=FLS2K;1590521612]My dealer confirmed today what I already knew, I'm loosing ~1.5q/2000 miles.

I would think a lessor amount of usage would be required for the Emission Certificate on this engine. Normal usage for the LT1 is about 1/4 Quart in 4k miles. Now the Cadillac Northstar engines did use too much oil and usually needed a quart between 3k mile changes. Not the case on LS and LT engines with longer change intervals. I have not had to add oil on any of my Corvettes between changes. But I do not go 10k miles either!

Lots of warranty remaining, could be just grazed cylinder walls. If that is the case the engine will go the distance and should use less oil with mileage. Add oil as required, don't stress.
