To update, when at the dealer for a free oil change last week I mentioned the above issue to the SM again, who still had no answers. He did, however, recommend doing the current TCM software update, which he performed including the fast-learn procedure. The tranny now shifts better without the soft shifts I had been getting mostly when cold. I never had a hard-shift problem and there's no determination yet on the sporadic reverse delay, but time will tell on that. The accompanying docs show #14876, which is described as a fix for the hard-shift problem that I never had. If I get the original issue again I'll report here.
I wait for about 30 seconds after starting my car before putting it in gear. Give this a try especially after the car has been sitting for several days.

That's just ridiculous to have to do in order to get reverse.

So have you experienced the delay with blinking orange "R" on the DIC?
One time I tried waiting for idle to decrease before shifting to R, maybe 10-15 sec., but the delay still happened. Since it only occurs once or twice every 90 days I can't say it is has been a real problem. In each case moving to D, then back to R effects engagement, so I've lost maybe a few seconds of my time. I would just like to know what's causing it, and to date nobody has been able to do that. Time will tell if the software update helps.
Yes the transmission is faulty. This email is from the the Corvette Brand quality engineer, Jeff Strausser
Regarding your delayed engagement when you first start the vehicle. Give this a try, when you start the vehicle. Wait 30 seconds before moving the shifter out of park. This give the transmission time to fill the torque converter. I recall speaking with you on the converter bleed back condition and a service kit is being release shortly.
Regards,
Jeff
My car was just returned form the dealership after nearly 4 weeks with a "shuddering" problem under light acceleration and also was exhibiting the engagement delay. Mr. Strausser was extremely helpful in having a replacement torque converter and transmission assembly which has been redesigned since my 2015 z51 with the A8 tranny was manufactured sent to the dealer for replacement. Drive home was without apparent problem. These problems are apparently occurring frequently and likely will provoke a TSB at some point in the future.

Granted this is an old thread but just noticed this shift delay from park to reverse recently with my 2014 automatic. The car sits for 4-5 days at a time often so it's likely related. First time it happened i placed in reverse and hit the gas and nothing but the revving engine, I put it in park and I got out of the car to see if the front end was lodged onto the concrete parking block. Nope. Got back in and the car went into reverse no issue. Happened again about a week later and that's when i got worried and checked the forum. I just had it in for oil change about a week before it first happened. So, I'll let it warm up 30 seconds for now on and see what happens and I'll keep an eye out for any additional postings. Next visit to dealer won't be until sept '16.

I had an old 65 ford that did that ...of course the piece of junk had about 150,000 miles on it .... at the time I was told ... the tranny was old and worn out .... hope you issue can be resolved ...although ..if it were me .. I would not wait until sept. to get it checked ...
My 2016, build date 9/15, has a slight delay on a cold startup. The car does sit a few days at a time though. There is no flashing indicator "R" on the DIC.
