It Absolutely only works when the car is locked; that's what arms the system. It also won't work if the top is down (vert) or off (coupe: unless bypassed into thinking the top is still on via a "wall anchor"). To date there is no known bypass for the vert.
Keep in mind that the car won't lock if the trunk is open and not closed before the car times out (~20 minutes). You can shut your trunk after that and the doors will not lock, unless you open a door and shut it (which starts the lock/alarm sequence over.
Not true for my car at least. I didn't know the car had a motion detector until I had the roof off and reached iside my car with the keys inside the house. I didnt touch the car, I was reaching for my radar detector and before my hand reached halfway the alarm went off.
interesting; there are posts showing how to fool the switch (the sensor that detects if fthe top is on/up or not) so the interior motion alarm stays active during top off/down situations.
2014 coupe.Car locked, windows open. Will it work? I've reached in a few times and nothing. I did set it off once when I first got the car but I don't remember how! lol.

the inside motion detector is disabled if the targa is off, or the vert top down.
With my '15 coupe in the garage with targa installed - but with the windows down.... I threw a hat into the car through the open window - and the alarm went off.
Mike and other posters!
Never had it happen with my 15. I regularly park the car with windows down and have to reach into the console or passenger seat to get items like sunglasses, digital air gauge..
For all of us to be on the same page please say if your alarm has been turned on, (Mine is not in my garage) OR is your car configured to be in armed alarm status when you walk away from car. My fobs are set to not lock that way, when I want the car locked I push the button.
Did that with my last four Vettes and see no need to use the passive alarm!
I know about this button (after reading the manual for about the 10th time and reading stuff on this forum). My question is, when I am in my garage, fob in pocket and sitting in the car, about 20% of the time when I shut my door, it gives me a quick triple horn beep. I can't figure out why it sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't. I have look at the manual a bunch of times. I can really slam the door or a nice gentle closure. Any ideas?

If I open the passenger door and place something on that side, today it was a helmet. I get in my side to start the car and I get a double beep from the horn. This has happened a couple of times. So, I'm in the same boat. Is this letting us know that the alarm is working????
Nope....when I jack up my car with the FOB in my pocket the alarm goes off. (i.e. when I have not pressed the above mentioned button)
Mine too. I was changing out my wheels and the alarm kept going off. I had forgotten about the motion sensor. I finally put the fob in the car. Then no alarm.
