Ok, I've hit the magic 30K mark and I need new tires. I want to go with Michelin but I have two choices: The rears are the same for both tire combos but the front ones have two different loading codes. (89Y and 93Y) From what I understand this refers to load rating, (speed same). The higher load rating, (93Y) is less expensive by about $200.
Logic suggests it should be the other way around unless the lesser load rating indicates more flex in the tires and more grip, etc.
The one with the higher load rating is likely and XL version which means extra load. Pricing often depends on production volume. Some tires are OEM and therefore produced in much higher volumes. I too also always refer to TireRack's " specifications" on the tire type ( say Pilot Super Sport non run flat). You will find variations in tread thickness, tread width etc in the same listed tire size. If you check out 295-30-20 PSS, there are 3 tires in this size alone and each has different specs.
I just installed 255-35-19 fronts and 295-30-20 rears (BMW spec) PSS. I LOVE the non run flats! Ride much better and handle more predictably.
