Well, my problem is solved. I have had this work iPhone for about 6 months and VZ/Apple have pushed at least 3 or 4 iOS system updates so I (wrongly) assumed it had the latest. Just for grins I checked today and there was an update to iOS 9.3 available. Did that and CarPlay now works. The phone previously had 9.2.1 and had CarPlay enabled and it was clearly trying to connect. But there was some incompatibility between the iOS and the MyLink for that version. Very strange... but now I am happy I don't need a trip to the dealer until next oil change when I'll get the Android Auto update.
