Early last week, I went to the dealer to order my new 2016 corvette (first corvette for me). However, over the weekend, the sales person emails me saying its actually going to be built as a 2017 corvette and says that it shouldn't change anything.
So, is this common? Does anyone know if I should expect any major changes between the 2 years? Price/features changes?
Well it's not really common, but it happens at the end of a model year. The 17's have some new features with the PDR if you got that, and the entertainment system will be a little faster I suppose. I'm not exactly sure what else they changed tbh. Pricing is out now so your dealer should be able to price your order for you. Congrats!
I have a note here at my computer that says the start up date for the 2017 Stingray is 6/24. So, If your TPW is after 6/24 your Corvette will be a 2017. The 2017 Z06's will be delayed for a couple of months. I believe this info to be correct but like I said I just saw a note that I wrote down sometime back. In any event enjoy your new Corvette ...

Congrats on your 16 or 17. Surprising though, that your dealer didn't know what year Vette he was ordering for you until after the fact.
Better check your order against the 2017 order guide then, and be sure what you ordered is what you're getting and that there are no new options or RPO codes that you would like to include.
Also find out your dealer's allocations for 2017, as it could be a long wait if they have few allocations and other orders in front of yours.
Key with ordering is to find a dealer with allocations available... The big forum dealers have plenty to be able to accommodate all of the on demand orders, and be able to turn them around quickly, but most of the other dealers have limited allocations which are subject to consensus delays.

Thank you for any info.
Happened to me too as well, friend. Price went up slightly but thats about it. Didn't mind too much besides the extra wait, but well worth it IMO.
Some of the info from above posters is good info, but a bit cryptic if you're new to Corvettes. I take it you may be new to Corvettes as well as this forum which is a wealth of info.
I also seem to think that whomever you ordered from is not very well versed in Corvettes if they don't know the differences betw. a '17 and '16, or when the order process ended for the '16. The most important thing to check on is the dealer's allocation because without a sufficient allocation for models, it is quite likely that an "order" will be placed, but not fulfilled for a long time, or ever.
There are forum Chev new car dealers on here who give great discounts (possibly not for '17s since they will be brand new, not end of model year like '16s) and who are extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of ordering, options, pricing, etc. If I were you, I'd look at who they are and at least talk with one or two.
