Dexos is a spec. You are right to use Mobil 1 as recommended, but wrong about the brand Dexos

Default Mobil one

G.M. requires the oil changes to be MOBIL ONE and remberses(sp) the dealers for it.Obviously there is a reason the engineers want this done. DEXOS is a spec which is a blend Not a full synthetic
I have seen the tests where a new Mercedes had MOBIL ONE put in it on a 100,000 mile continuous test and the motor was dissasembed and there was virtually no wear.
Mobil one is also a factory fill for Porsche and Mercedes.
When something is really good and becomes a standard bearer you hear its faster than a Corvette etc. Or its better than Mobil one.

Default how ofter to change?

The 2014 Z51 I just bought hasn't had the oil changed in about 16 months
The car has 6700 miles. The data on the screen says the oil life is 50%.
I guess I am due for a change? I mean what % should you change the oil
or will I receive a prompt to change on the screen?

My understanding is the GM oil life algorithm adjusts for time and that you should not go more than 12 months between oil changes. Is it possible the car had an oil change within the last 12 months? Otherwise I would think your oil life indicator would be at 0%.

Mine showed the percentage down to about 3% and then started popping up a message telling me I needed an oil change. My oil changes were at 500 miles, 7500 and 15,000. At 7500 and 15000 they were down to 1%.

Also note that at anytime you can reset the oil percent gauge. No telling if yours was prematurely reset. Or maybe it got an oil change at 3000 miles and you are 50% of the way to your next change.

I put on 15K in 7 months so I have no idea about time being a factor.

Default Sickers May be Usless

IMO, if the service manager tells the mechanics helper who operates the oil change bay to use the cheap dexos blend he bought in 55 gallon drums-that is what they will do regardless of a "stinking sticker!"

You either take the time to talk with the service manager and perhaps stand outside the oil change bay and watch or:
1) the person working the oil change bay will take the easy way out and pull the trigger on the gun that pumps oil from the 55 gallon tank of whatever "Oh-So-Peachy" oil the boss purchased! There are some 100 listed by GM that meet their dexos spec. Some are full synthetic and some are blends. Whoever has paid the a tribute to GM to put dexos approved on their package! Just like API gets a few pennies/quart for having their spec/name put on the package!

2) For the Tech to use Mobil 1- instead of just pulling the trigger on the pumped oil drum, has to go to the parts department and check out Mobil 1. Then has to carry perhaps 10 quarts to his work bay. If he gets any commission based on how many he does, he'll just forget the sticker!

Have to ask and then argue if needed that they get reimbursed by GM for Mobil 1 and that is what you want!

IMO, the excuse that they put in what is on the oil fill cap is just that an excuse to take the easy way out and more profitable oil!

The dealership nearest to me doesn't even get 55 gal drums for their commonly used oils, they have two huge tanks for 5W-30; one is for Mobil1 and the other is for some generic Dexos spec brand. The truck comes around and fills up each tank from the appropriate nozzle on the truck. And since I sent a sample from every change on our C6 to Blackstone, I could verify that they were indeed using Mobil1 in my car.

For a while at least, Dexos was both a spec and a "brand". GM was pushing a Dexos-spec product where the bottle said Dexos in big letters, the only brand name on the bottle was AC Delco or GM. See link below. And some of the early GM literature spoke as if Dexos was a brand. Of course Mobil1 is Dexos spec, but you needed to look carefully on the older bottles to see the note.
The confusion from that is still ongoing today.
The CF group seemed to mostly catch on a lot sooner than some others.

You can order a AC Delco oil cap from Amazon that comes in a Delco wrapper and says "Mobil1" instead of Dexos, and "5W-30". Part # FC221. The site doesn't claim it fits the dry sump C7 but mine looks exactly the same except for the writing and the O-ring is a different color. Mine was installed today, seems to fit perfectly.
But the stickers are certainly cheaper!
I'm not sure if the wet sump engines use an identical cap.

Why would GM try to destroy their product? Not a good business practice to me, makes no sense.

With all the good posts on this Thread why is there still confusion!?

GM doesn't have an oil company! Sure they may have someone bottle a product they call XXX and of course it meets their own dexos (small d) specification. They don't have to pay tribute to themselves as ALL Others do who put "meets GM dexos spec" on the package!

It's NOT their product it's their specification that can be full synthetic or a blend as long as it meets their performance spec not "What's Is In It" spec!

Before ~2000 there was a "What it's Made From" definition of synthetic. They Castrol screwed things up with a more highly refined "dino oil" that they called synthetic and was half cost to produce! Mobil sued them but lost. API and SAE helped them loose the law suit, IMO, because they had performance specs and said that was what should be used. However they also get a few pennies/quart for their specs to be put on containers (or at least did!) Conflict of interest, IMO!

Mobil and others had to switch to the more highly refined "dino oil" approach to be competitive! GM said, heck if API and SAE can charge, we'll make our own spec and charge folks who want to put it on the package! (Perhaps not what GM said but looks that way! In fact for a while Mobil refused to pay the tribute!)

This is a good article from the day by Car & Driver, if you're interested:

Got my stickers today as well. I trimmed down the one and made it fit a little better than it would have originally.

As long as it is under warranty I will use what they say.

All the Mobil 1 stickers, caps, will not guarantee your dealer puts in Mobil 1 and not the blend. Check your invoice and look up the part number for Mobil 1. I was told by the service writer that they always used Mobil 1 in the C-7's and when I checked my invoice, they had used the blend. I got another free oil change. I am out of free oil changes and I now purchase the Mobil 1, oil filter and take it to my local tire shop and watch them put in the engine.
