What I'm saying is those numbers are BS. Not relevant. First, 0-60 numbers at these power levels are a crapshoot with RWD cars. Both cars are woefully traction limited. Of course GM is gonna say the ZL1 is .6 seconds slower to 60, because it doesn't wanna cannibalize Z06 sales.
This .6 second discrepancy doesn't really add up though. The Z06 is about 300 lbs lighter. Power output between the two is the same. Z06 has arguably better traction with ~1" wider non Goodyear tires, but traction is also dependent on weight. In the end, my guess is real world 0-60 will be close. On a prepped track I think you'll see 60 ft times within .1 of each other and a 1/4 mile time less than .3 of a second apart.
That said, if you equate the new Camaro to a Bel Air, it is clear you haven't driven one, or even spent much time reading reviews about it (or its platform-mate, the ATS).
Not the point I was trying to make. It's not about "reading reviews" and I have absolutely zero desire to drive a Camaro. The Bel Air and the Camaro are 4 passenger plus sedans. The vette is a bona fide sports car. They're not in the same class at all. Comparing their relative speed is really irrelevant compared to the totality of the cars. It's an apples and oranges comparison.

I CAN REMEMBER(because i'm old)WHEN GM'S OFFICIAL DECREE TO
THE DIVISIONS-NONE OF THEIR CARS WAS GOING TO BE FASTER THAN THE CORVETTE---De Lorean tried but his concept model was immediately killed off.
seems chevrolet is now being encouraged to actually do it for even less money! careful Z06 the camaro boys have you in their sights-a case of friendly fire?
With few exceptions Camaro has been killed by Mustang on the sales side the whole time that GM had that decree. It's finally time that they let every car be as good as it can be instead of hampered by some internal BS.

My first car...a 1974 Camaro "Type LT" had a V8 that put out 145 hp. Never thought I'd see these days again of high-powered cars going at each other again.

Pretty true here, even when the last gen 1LE was just as good if not better than the Boss 302. Nowadays I'd rather be in a GT350 than a ZL1. Very different animals but similarly priced pony cars.
A long time ago when the new Camaro first came out I was invited to a pre introduction launch event. Someone asked the GM guy in charge about the Corvette motor going into the Camaro and he said exactly this. No sacred cow engines and drive trains exist at GM any more you will soon see the Corvette engine as it is in many other GM vehicles from now on.

Excellent observation. Glad that we were both wrong.
I couldn't help but laugh as it relates to your Firebird reference. I had a 77 that whenever I needed to pull onto a highway I had to turn off the AC to ensure that there was enough power to safely pull into traffic.
0-60 is the STUPID performance measurement of all time.
There, I feel better.
I agree 100%! Overall peformance and handling is much more important than straight line acceleration. If you want a car that will win a drag race build a dragster. The Corvette is sold as America's "Sports Car".
I believe your right. With the 400 pounds added weight it makes A difference.
I will say at $62K 650 HP it sounds like A good deal.
Myself I would go for A used Z06 for the same money.
