Sad GM
I CAN REMEMBER(because i'm old)WHEN GM'S OFFICIAL DECREE TO
THE DIVISIONS-NONE OF THEIR CARS WAS GOING TO BE FASTER THAN THE CORVETTE---De Lorean tried but his concept model was immediately killed off.
seems chevrolet is now being encouraged to actually do it for even less money! careful Z06 the camaro boys have you in their sights-a case of friendly fire?

Camaro has always been close good for Chebby
Not like most will be tracking thier car anyway
Remember the dark days of performance in the 70s gas rationing etc, if you got a decal pkg it was a big deal
(Just about everything built then was a raging pos mechanically. Now they are stout mechanically and electronic nightmares, too many of them). When the 5.0 GTs and C4s cracked 200hp there was a glimmer of hope for more power

It won't be the first time that the fastest Camaro variation could exceed the slowest (make that least fast) Corvette configuration on some measures.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
Anyway, as for those who were mentioning the 0-60 times, I'd wager the Z06 and Camaro are a lot closer to each other than the published GM numbers suggest. Based on what I've seen at Spring Mtn and the Karl Corvette day at Iowa Speedway, the Camaros get around the track almost as good as similarly powered C7s. If you have a C7 Z06 at the track, you better know what you're doing because the guy that knows how to drive his ZL1 is gonna be all over you.
I personally would never buy a car I didn't absolutely love the styling of, no matter how good it performs.
But in terms of being competition for the vette? These cars aren't even on the radar.
They looks so much better that camaros and mustangs. Now less of them on the road would be better.

That said, if you equate the new Camaro to a Bel Air, it is clear you haven't driven one, or even spent much time reading reviews about it (or its platform-mate, the ATS).
GM did a fantastic job on this platform and the Camaro -- it handles great. Exactly like a Corvette? No, still heavier and bigger. But very much "on the radar" and fairly close.
They are still different cars, with different audiences, and with somewhat different purposes, and very few people will prefer to cruise around in the Camaro over the Corvette all things being equal (as long as you only need 2 seats). But if you are spending money on a track car, you've got a tough decision to make (actually for me, probably wouldn't even be that tough, can spend about 60- 65% of the $$ for probably 80-90% of the performance of a Z06).
Corvette drivers shouldn't be jealous or downplay what GM did, as noted, this is a great time for sports cars, and it is good that the Corvette and Camaro teams have each other for some internal competition that makes both cars better.

I lived through the dark days of 150 hp V8s that ran like crap.
Enjoy it while it lasts, before the green tree hugger globalists force everyone into bicycles while they fly all over the globe on their private jets to attend their global warming conferences.
