1. Waze will be coming to AA this year (according to Android) the reason for the delay as i understood it was that the developers wanted to make the buttons on the steering wheel work with waze in AA, so for example if you see a jam you just press a button on the steering wheel.
Got a reference? Because there are no real buttons on the steering wheel that don't already have predetermined functions. And while say our vettes have the arrow keys on right hand side of the steering wheel, other cars won't (and, again, besides, those buttons have predetermined meanings. I wouldn't want, say the left button to suddenly mean something else because Waze was running). AA already integrates with the call and hangup buttons. What other buttons do you think Waze is thinking of reassigning?
Oh and click the link I posted and you'll see a prototype of Waze running under AA.
2. Re the NAV, the supplied nav is pretty childish looking (like a little tykes Nav)
That's funny because my opinion of Waze is that it's pretty childish looking.
however the fact that directions appear in the instrument cluster and the HUD display means i use that in the background just because the HUD nav is so convenient around town
Waze will not integrate with the HUD. Current Google Maps in AA does not integrate with the HUD. Methinks the API for the HUD in GM cars (do other car manufactures have HUDs? If so they probably have their own, nonstandard, API) is unpublished and thus nobody, 'cept for GM, will ever integrate with the HUD.
as far a distraction goes it does seem like an awfully nice feature to have it display in the instrument cluster.
I'm planning to buy a car after the new year and this makes a big difference to me.
the PDR/nav system is $1800 bucks and I have no need for the PDR, so that kinda bucks for nav when there are alternatives make it be a no brainer to not get it
if it's the only way to get nav in the instrument cluster then "MAYBE?"

Don't get me wrong - I like the turn by turn in the HUD too. And I was very disappointed when AA failed to update the HUD. I thought if there were any set of engineers that would get that right it'd be Google. But it doesn't work.
That said, given the vastly superior experience and functionality of AA with GM, I decided to give up the turn by turn in the HUD.

If I am being honest AA is pretty isolated to the touchscreen. Voice controls don't work unless you hit the mic on the touchscreen. I would love to have "OK google" support. Integration is not great...but its the best we have.

What are you talking about? Hit the talk button the steering wheel (long press) viola! Just like OK Google! Hit the Fav > or < Fav buttons - you go forward or backward on your media. Hit the volume up or down *****, the volume goes up or down. So far I haven't touched the screen at all. What else do you want? Or more importantly which button on the steering wheel are you gonna steal from it's current function?
OK, I know I'm gonna catch some flak, but I'm gonna talk about OnStar anyway. I have AA, and when I'm on a long road trip I also have an OnStar subscription (that I cancel when i get home). On my last trip I thought heck, I'll give OnStar directions a go just because I could. I was pleased to see that after OnStar downloaded the directions the turns would show up on the screen along with the DIC, and of course along with verbal commands and beeps. I know this doesn't really fit the OP's question, but I just wanted to let those without a Nav know. I thought it was pretty cool, but I'm old and easily amused.
folks seem to talk up Waze as a nav app
My current vehicle doesn't have android auto but I've played with Waze on my phone and it seems to work quite well
Might want to check it out
Waze is a nice app. It gives you real time intelligence on the road ahead. By just pushing a couple of buttons you can tell others when you see a cop for example. You'll know about lane closures before you see the signs in some cases because others are reporting what they see as they go down the road. I like it. It's probably saved me at least one ticket.
Another clueless dealer. AA is a FREE upgrade for 16 owners.
Stopped by a dealer in California while on my first trip in my new Stingray and asked about the upgrade. He took the time to investigate and gave me this link:
Called Chevrolet Cadillac of Bend yesterday and discussed the above link yesterday. The service writer said :" Our Service Manager is out of town. I will discuss it with HER when SHE returns. Any clue?
Anyway thanks to this forum I'm gonna get and it will be at no charge.
Take your phone. Pre-download and install AA from the playstore. Bring a cable, not a charging (only) cable but a data cable (data cables will allow you to transmit data to say you laptop. A charging (only) cable will not - the original cable should work). Make sure before you leave the dealer that AA from your cell phone in the car works before you leave.
