Default Check your chrome Z51 wheels closely

My 3-year bumper to bumper warranty will run out in Jan. 2017. My car has 18,000 miles and never been in the rain. Only washed wheels with soap/water. Both front 19 inch only (not back) have started pitting. Very small but local dealer sent my pictures to GM and they authorized 2 new wheels. The replacements had small dings in the rim and then were chromed over so dealer is ordering a second set. My point is check your wheels closely before 3 years are up. These wheels are now $908 each list price. Don't bother telling me I should have ordered black. I am a chrome guy.

I'm pretty sure that is caused by road debris. Notice where it occurs; forward facing surface of spoke. Also, notice it gets worse the further you get from center. That is likely because that part of the wheel is moving faster and impacts debris harder. I'm surprised GM helps with this but pleased they do. I keep thinking I should put film on that part of my wheels if I ever actually get my car. Also, black wheels get this too as the little rocks chip up the paint pretty easily. Glad you are getting help from GM.

I agree that looks like road debris coupled with brake dust which raises havoc on the wheels as well. I have the silver painted Z51 wheels on my '14 and with 9,000 miles they do have some chipping & pitting. Not ever driven on dirt/gravel roads but lots of highway driving. The wheel design invites this type of chipping. I, too, am surprised GM would authorize replacements. Some of the black wheels I've seen look really bad as the chips are more obvious. I suppose the 3M or similar film would help, but probably difficult to do correctly and costly.

With out a doubt, its sand blast, all types of pavement have small fine sand and stones. The main source of throw back are those wonderfully sticky MPSS tires. Tears up painted wheels faster.

Good that GM is covering it, but at the same time surprised that they are doing so.

I've only had chrome wheels once in the recent past, but I surely don't remember seeing those pits/chips on my wheels and I had them for about 130K mostly hiway miles. Different shape, of course, but one of the main reasons for chrome is it's tougher than paint, yes?

I have that condition on my March, 2014 delivered Z51...I only run the chrome in the winter because I have Pirelli snow tires on them. I noticed it at about 4000 miles. When I prepped the wheels/tires for summer storage I tried to fix the defects, but found out they are clearly from stone impingement, not pitting from beneath the chrome. I'm not too bothered by it as these are the wheels that will go with the car when I sell/trade in.

I would say its sand blasting because it looks exactly like my others cars that came from California ( used not new ) and the wheels were ok but the windshield looked bad in the sunlight but ok in slightly cloudy Pacific Northwest !!! Wayne

I am having all four of my '15 Z51 chrome wheels changed out today under warranty.... less a pitting problem than a bubble and flake off issue. Car was in La. around salt, not sure if that was a factor, but it only had 6K miles and never driven other than paved roads..... garaged....

Thankfully getting changeout done under warranty as WOW.... $900 per wheel.... that is insane....smile....LK
