So, I love my 2017 Grand Sport, with zero complaints so far.....but one. I bought a Corvette, an American Muscle car, the true sports car, and a V8 not a 4 cylinder. I also bought a V8 cause I give 2 ***** about gas mileage. So, I have an A8, but I want no 4 cylinder mode. I can flash the drive I assume??? Help plz.
You can get an AFM range disabler that plugs into your obd port that will keep it from going into 4 cylinder mode. It's a slow battery drain though, so if the car is going to sit for a bit you have to pull it.
I assume a tune could take it out too, but then you run into warranty issues.

Range AFM works on my 2016 too, so might be OK on 17. If you do go this route here's a tip--the 4 blue LEDs are kind of overkill. A little electrical tape fixes it . . .

I wasn't crazy about the 4-banger business either, but honestly, in my opinion the transition between the V8 mode and the V4 and back is so unobtrusive I don't even notice it. The instant you need all 8 cylinders to get up and go, they are all present and accounted for.
The only way I know it's in V4 mode is that the green V4 icon lights up on the DIC. I do understand your point, however, and as others have pointed out, there are ways around it.
The OP has an A8. On the auto, E mode only expands the parameters with which the car will put it into, and will keep it in V4 mode. Otherwise, the car is able to utilize V4 in all modes while in D.
Only using paddle shifters (in M) will prevent this, barring an after market fix.
To the OP, could not agree more - stupid libiturd greenies and their CAFE standards! The Ranger is the best solution out there that keeps your warranty. Here is my post about the AFM from another thread on this very same subject just the other day.
The only better solution is a tune to permanently disable the stupid AFM. But that will void your warranty.
Big disadvantage to the Ranger is how it drains the battery. Yes, leaving a battery tender plugged in will prevent any draining issues. But additionally, my solution was to use a ODB extension cable that had an on/off switch. Just turn off the Ranger when I want if the tender is not available. Yes, one could just pull it to turn it off, but I am not sure how many time the ODB port can take that without having pin problems.
I also have a ODB Y cable to support a Window Valet. Just don't put the Window valet after the switch. Connect the Y cable before the switch. The Window Valet does not work at all when placed after the switch for some unknown reason.

PS . . . One benefit of using the switch like this is that I bet you never get any limp-mode start/CEL lights. The rare limp-mode starts all seem to be at startup, and your approach activates the Range after starting. (I sent Range a suggestion that they just build in a few second timer so that their unit let the car start first.)
