1) The RPM's are floating. When driving on the interstate, car in cruise going 65 MPH. The RPM guage floats from 1400-1700 RPM's constantly. It almost feels like the car is going up/down a gear. It's never done this before. It happens when in "D", when i drop the car down into "M" which puts the car into 8th gear it stays pretty steady at 1500 RPM. So its only noticable in "D" when in cruise. I haven't really noticed it that much while driving not in cruise.
2) When i turn the wheel left or right in "D" or "R" there is a poping/knocking noise coming from the rear wheels. You don't have to turn the wheel all the way left or right to get it to do this. When it first happened i thought the front wheels were hitting the wheel well or scrubbing something but this is not the case. My unlce is a mechanic and says it could be that the grease in the rear end needs to be replaced. He also said it could be the positrack messing up. He said its like the back wheels are locking up and causing the poping noise. Its never done this before, ever.
The car is still under warranty so i'm going to make an appointment to take it in to get checked out this coming week. Just wondering if anyone on the site has had any issues similar. Thanks for the help.
Engine RPM sounds like classic A8 torque converter fail. As for the clicking sound, is it at low speed or do you hear it at any speed? Perhaps the diff needs a friction modifier tweak. Too much friction modifier, and Ive read an LSD will one wheel wonder. Not enough modifier and the diff makes clickety clack sounds during low speed sharp turns... Kinda like the sounds you hear from a worn out CV joint on a FWD car.

I had the same problem with the engine RPM drifting up & down about 100 rpm in automatic. No noise or surge, just up & down. I put it in manual mode and I had no problem. I had the car for about 8k, and since I was on the way to a dealer to trade it in, I figured I'd let the next owner worry about it.
(1) Your torque converter is bad, need to take your car to a dealer whose changed TC's before. They are able to properly diagnose the problem. Do a search on the forum for "A8's and Torque Converter Failure" This Thread will give you other symptoms of a bad torque converter which you could have and not be aware of it. Your wreck has nothing to do with this problem.
(2) Was your car damaged in the rear end, you must have a damaged part in the rear. Have the dealer check it out or a mechanic you trust.

...........needs a new TC and with the rear end of the car torn out to replace the TC they can fix the other issue at the same time.
............a good dealer who has done these previously can do that job without doing any damage to the car at all, at least that has been my experience on two tranny tear outs. Good luck and hope you get it fixed soon and back on the road.
Not trying to be a smart-*** here, but in cruise control, your car will accelerate slightly or coast to keep a set speed. Has this been taken into account?
Also do you have a base car or one with the eLSD. The eLSD works differently than a standard LSD and maybe there was some damage to the unit due to the wreck.
Lance,
Lance if I remember correctly your car is a Z51, which has the ELSD.
My guess on the differential is a cable that was damaged or not re-installed correctly during repairs.
I think that is a pretty minor repair. Can't comment on the A8, no knowledge of them at all.
George
This would be my assumption as well.. The minor rear-end damage this car suffered is not going to cause the torque converter to fail or the diff to need a fluid change.. I would bet on an electrical connector being unplugged, or similar.
With the nighrmaee the OP has suffered, I hope he can get this resolved quickly and get into his new car ASAP.

According to the TSBs that I've seen regarding the torque converter, some RPM fluctuation is normal. If it is bucking/shuddering then you have a torque converter failure. If you don't feel the fluctuations, I suspect that they won't touch your torque converter...
