Identity theft would be a thing of the past if the punishment was death! Yes I absolutely mean that literally and no 20 years on death row this would happen in a week or less.

I was a victim of identity theft a few years ago. Had a nice discussion with an FBI agent who is a friend. He said only about 5% of the cases are ever prosecuted.

You can put a block on your credit with the three agencies which will prevent anyone from even checking your credit, much less opening an additional account or getting a loan in your name. It can be inconvenient if you actually need to use your credt, such as for opening a cell phone account, but in those cases you can enact a temporary "un-freeze" for a set number of days. If you're under 65 it costs $10 a pop; otherwise it is free. The bigger pain is "managing" what you are doing, keeping the passwords secure, but available, stuff like that. I've had my credit locked up for years and had to un-freeze it only one time. Well worth the hassle in my opinion.

Stupid thieves. How long did they think they could drive the car before some found them???
They are even bad at being crooks.

I did this as well as i went through a horrible case 5 years ago. Froze everything and only open it when necessary. I get to do it for free as I'm now recognized as an identity theft victim. Its kept me from buying things on a whim and probably saved me a bunch of cash in the long run. The attorney fees sucked but now that its cleaned up i consider it a learning experience.
Oh and one more thing, i had life lock at the time and they were of NO help at all, i actually caught it because one of the stores where a credit card app was being processed contacted me about an error on the app.

As of today, I have all 3 agencies "Frozen". I like this as I've worried about this for a long time. I also don't think "LifeLock" is worth two pieces of bull doo-doo.

I had someone charge $1800 for some Louis-Vitton purchase that I would never make. My CC company contacted me right away, and LifeLock never did.
When I spoke to someone on the phone about it, they said, "Nobody can monitor all transactions" which is apparently what they are trained to say when they want to really **** someone off and lose a customer.
