I'm planning on going to Ron Fellows driving school in late April. I am taking my wife and we want to make a vacation out of it. Other than going to Vegas, which we have no desire to do, what else is there to do in that part of the country? We will have a rental car and will stay seven to 10 days depending on what else we can find to do. The driving school is only two days so we several more days to fill. Any suggestions??
In the past we have 'done' Hoover Dam (fairly recent new visitors center...1st class) followed by a drive to the Grand Canyon south rim staying at the hotel at the canyon. From there a leisurely drive to Phoenix via Sedona, and then fly out of Phoenix.
As mentioned, Hoover Dam and death Valley are close by. And there's the Grand Canyon to the southeast. I took two days and headed east to Zion NP, Bryce Canyon and Arches NP in Utah . My first time at our wonderful western National parks and they were just amazing. I would have liked to include nearby Canyon Lands , but just didn't have enough time.

We got a condo for a week in Vegas with a rental car. Drove down to SM and then returned to Vegas for a couple days before we flew home. There is plenty to keep you busy for a week even if you don't gamble.
We had never been to Vegas so booked a resort without a Casino. Spent our time there doing Hoover Dam (1 day), Red Rock Canyon (1 day), checking out the old Vegas water works (1/2 day), driving the Strip (1 night), dinner at Caeser's one night. On the way to Death Valley we stopped at Pahrump to drop off the luggage and then drove the rest of the way to the Valley. Spent about 2 hours getting there from Pahrump, 2 hours back and about 5 hours there (the Chevy Cruze rental car really was buzzing on that trip).
There are more things to do in Death Valley but we were trying to limit the duration of the trip to a week. Flew out on a Wednesday and came back the following Wednesday. The night before we left we stayed at the Silverton in Vegas. Old cheap casino that smells heavily of smoke (Caeser's smelled a little better) but not bad for one night at $60.
Red rock is a great drive. i don't find gambling to be enjoyable at all. I prefer to dump my change into the coin machine at my Navy FCU where the total always goes up. I do like Vegas and have been there many times. A lot to do in Vegas besides gamble. You could cruise the strip (unless you have a crappy rental unit which would be embarrassing) and go to Gold & Silver Pawn and check on Chumley. I am planning to go in April sometime myself. Using the money I didn!'t gamble away.

My wife wanted nothing to do with Las Vegas. After the 2nd day of class we stayed at the Weston in Las Vegas Lake, next day was Hoover Dam then we drove to Sedona. In Sedona we stayed at the Sedona Cathedral Hideaway bed and breakfast (highly recommend). During our stay we took a day trip to the Grand Canyon. It was a great vacation.
