That and the mention of the standard C5 coupe at $15,000 will really effect how I judge perspective 1982 Collector Editions.
I agree with both comments. Biggest bang for the buck is a C5. Some higher mileage C5 Z06 can be had for as low as $15K. The article did not mention that 01 Z06 is priced lower than the 02-04 years.
C5 coupes, especially 01 to 04 are very reliable, with no parts availability issues (granted some parts, like HUD, are only available as used, but are readily available).
The C4 ZR1 is a great car for the money, but where do you get parts?
EDIT: The mid 70's C3s are good looking cars, but if you have to swap engines to get performance, the cost will make the total investment equal to a C5 or more. Then selling a car with an engine swap is way harder than selling a basically original car.

The greatest bargain on this planet in vettes right now is the new C7 stripper that you can get out the door for under $50k. The best performance vette per dollar of any of the C class: now, previous, and until the C8 arrives. Bumper to Bumper warranty coverage for 3 years, extended power train warranty, options to buy even more GM-Sponsored BtoB warranty. Free maintenance for two years. Designed for the fuels and roads of today. The best tech, handling and straight line performance ever produced, until tomorrows vette arrives.
if you are a renaissance man and have a shop, a lift, a paint booth, a machine shop to fab repair parts, and can do all repairs at zero dollar labor cost; every used car is a bargain.
But at $70-80/hr for labor for regular mechanics, $80-$125/hr for stealerships, (craftsmen/artisans on a you have to ask, you can't afford me price) cars get old and sold rather quickly nowadays.
Salute the collector guy keeping the old bones alive, he's wearing his fortune on his key fob.
