I really like how GM stepped up with a little style and offered the contrasting color appendages. About your questions: You answered your first question yourself. Concerning your second question - Most of what you see is the mirror itself. The housing is not really too noticeable. I have never once thought about it so it obviously doesn't bother me.
My roof is the exposed CF version (I also have the see-thru version) but harder to tell from a distance.
