For about a minute or two after I turn on my A/C in my C7 it really smells badly. For those of you living out west, it's like a feedlot-bad. It goes away quickly but if I stop and run an errand and come back, it stinks again for a few minutes. Any ideas appreciated.
Feedlot bad? Like chicken farm bad? Every car smells sometimes on the Eastern Shore. Tyson, Mountainaire, Purdue. Whew. A new cabin air filter might fix you up.
The first thing I thought of. The car's is only about a year old but I pulled it out and couldn't see (or smell) anything that would cause it. I was wondering about stale water where the condenser is housed.
I just had my wife's HVAC system chemically treated to remove the AC smell.
The best thing you can do is turn off the AC a minute or two before turning off the car. This will get rid of the excess moisture in the system so mold and bacteria don't grow. I've done this in all my cars and have never had the smell.
I believe that there is a dealer setting to allow the A/C fan to run for a few minutes after you turn off the engine. See linked thread about "afterblow." Also - are you sure the condensate drain is open? Do you get water on the garage floor under the front passenger side & sizzling sound on front exhaust after engine shutoff?
Go to the dealer, tell them your problem, then tell them you'd like afterblow engaged. I waited until the first hint of odor coming out of my A/C and then went in (with some other minor fixes I'd been putting off). A quick trip to the dealer and the problems were fixed.
I checked for condensation dripping after running the A/C and didn't see a thing. That may be a false sign as this is very dry country. I think I'll get under there and see if I can find the hose or whatever drains the condensate to see if it may be pinched or plugged. Would I be looking on the right side front like most cars? I do have a warranty oil change coming up so if I can't find anything wrong with the drain, I can have them look at it and/or activate the afterblow.
Was the car sitting for a long time? I have seen rodents nesting in the box holding the cabin air filter during winter storage that leaves a pungent odor.
