Its not a switch that closes the hatch or trunk; its an auto-latch system. Once the hatch/trunk is put down the car will pull it the rest of the way and latch it. That way you don't have to slam the unit shut.
The pull down is nice to have (I have it on my C6) but it's not 100% necessary either. I had no troubles closing the trunk on my C5, I would just make sure a door is open or a window is cracked and then drop the trunk from a few inches up. It would close nicely without slamming down hard. When I get a C7 it will most likely be a 2014 so I know I'm not getting a power pull down on that and it doesn't bother me.

I would suggest that you try it before you buy it, as if not you may change your mind after owning a '14 or '15 without the power pull-down. I had a '15 and it was an irritating exercise every time I wanted to close the hatch. You could not close it without having a door open or window cracked at least 1", even with major force. I now have a 2017 so that irritation is behind me.
All that said, some with these earlier cars claim they can close theirs without the rigmarole, but mine was a major pain and it did not improve after two years.
I had a 2014 convertible without the pull down, now 2017 with, I liked the 2014 without better. Sometimes the latch does not get the proper amount of force applied and the pull down unit does not actuate.
Too bad GM didn't make the hatch power ope / close like on the Tahoe or Denali. I know, I know weight issues but it's a pain in the butt sometimes popping that hatch and then getting out and manually lifting it up and closing again.

But as I mentioned, with my C5 that was my habit, if I was closing the trunk I made sure a window or door was open and it was never a problem closing the hatch that way without any force.

You must be a very weak person. I never have an issue. What happens when it does not actuate that you don't like? You have to put one finger on it to get it to grab?

It depended on the specific 2014/15, GM never said what the difference was from car to car but finally reverted back to the motorized pull down that I had on my C6!
They used and touted a "magic" memory wire activated vent in the rear of 2014/15's. It used louvers on a ~14 X 4 inch vent. You could watch them operate through a large hole behind the license plate. Some cars actually latched using the handhold on the hatch without slamming! Some required pushing.
However the C7 has a narrow bottom hatch frame and some heavy pushing caused it to flex excessively (mine for example) and some had paint crack over time! Some posters actually had the bottom hatch frame crack from heavy pushing! I saw my September 2013 built C7 hatch frame bend excessively the fist time I pushed to latch and never did again!
However as Patman notes, it's no big deal. I just sold mine and showed the new owner all you had to do was leave the door open before you closed the hatch. In fact with one finger I could close the hatch while standing behind my open door and it closed and latched with little effort. With the doors and windows closed you could slam very hard and it would not latch! The power of small pressure differences!
For me it was no big deal, just had to remember to close the door after the hatch latched!
