I watched a YouTube video on how to install a performance air filter and the guy took the whole filter housing off does it really take all of that to install the new filter.
I had bought a K&N filter just to replace the stock one, went on youtube to see how to install it and...............yup it's a lot more involved then even my old C6, so I ended up selling the filter to a nice guy in Texas, bought an aFe CAI and paid my trustworthy Vette mechanic (Mark @ Titus-Will in Olympia, WA) to install it......
^^^ This is an 8 page picture/text of my aFe install. Almost as easy to install the whole system as just to change the air filter!
I chose the oiled cotton filter that is larger as well as lower restriction. They also sell a paper filter although it's somewhat higher flow restriction. Removed it from my 2014 Z51 when I sold it and it's going on my Grand Sport: http://netwelding.com/Cold_Air_Intake.pdf

If the C7 is anything like the newer Mustangs, then you probably don't need it.
There is only 1 aftermarket Intake/Filter that provides 1 extra HP to the Mustangs. The rest will cost you $ and a net loss of 3-10hp. depending.
I'm sure the added 5-10 RWHP @ 5000 rpms on a 460 HP car can really be felt!
But probably a bit more than 10 if you pick the larger than OEM oiled cotton filter for the aFe low restriction kit. A forum poster did a dyno before and after he had installed the aFe system with their paper, somewhat higher restriction filter got a 10 hp increase.
However I installed, as did he for the louder "sucking sound" at WOT! Compared to the NPP I added to my 2014 it's half the cost for the extra sound! Doubt anyone added NPP for the few extra ponies!
My Prostreet Rod has an 8.2 Liter big block with long tube headers and 3 inch pipes through Bola very low restriction muffles. The 14 inch diameter by 5 inch high K&N oiled cotton air filter makes a louder sucking sound than the exhaust at WOT.
Even Tadge when answering a question about low restriction systems said aftermarket suppliers don't have meet noise rules. He said intake flow is a major source of sound. FWIW
