I can't figure out what you're doing wrong either... Probably because you never mentioned exactly what you are doing, what you expected to happen and how it failed to meet your expectation!
Mine doesn't say beta.
You're right, I didn't explain anything. What I expected to happen was to use waze on my car's screen. It failed to meet my expectations by me not being able to get it to do that.
What I did was pretty much what was said was done in this thread- uninstalling/re-installing, unpairing/paring, and so on.
I asked about whether beta appeared in the version number because I wasn't sure I correctly downloaded it from your Drive.
When one poster says it's such a simple uninstall/install and voila it worked, then I'm left to think I did something wrong.
I actually had uninstalled this for two reasons. First, I don't think I'm officially on the Waze Beta - I can't log in nor report problems. Secondly, twice now this apparently broke everything (basically would not connect ever) requiring multiple reboots and reinstallations of various software and Bluetooth connections.
That said, a few other observations I've noticed:
There is no estimated time of arrival. I use this in GM all the time. It tells you what the time is expected to be when you arrive. As such I can tell if I need to rush or not. Waze doesn't have this.
No indication of traffic. Oh, yeah you and report traffic and get notified of a traffic jam I guess (note - no notifications are working for me at all!). However GM actually colors the route based on the amount of traffic. So you can see ahead of time that there's an upcoming traffic jam and know when to slow down. Even better, in GM the Route Overview screen shows the actual mapped route and colors that route. So you can see, if say you're driving from San Diego -> Bay Area that there are many red spots in LA.
Geez, not sounding like the change-over is worth the trouble.
You helped me decide to wait until/if I get to be a tester.
You left out the part about what you did. Whatever.
It's a beta. There will be bugs and omissions and things not yet implemented. That's how betas are. What I don't know, since I'm not a regular Waze user, is say whether or not the regular app colors the route based on traffic, etc... If not then technically this is not a bug but an enhancement. I posted here so that others who might be screaming "Well Waze is totally better than Maps" might understand that Waze appears to be missing really nice functionality out of the gate.

I'm not sure what is going on with your software. As you can see from the picture I posted, it has an ETA listed, and the colored traffic on the map definitely works
EDIT: Just looked at the picture YOU posted, and it has your ETA on the screen

Just askin'.
One thing they did specify in the beta invite email is that you need to start Waze on your phone before you plug it into the car. Did you do that?
I have now used Waze on Android auto in 3 different GM vehicles/models and they all work flawlessly the first time.

You know, with everything I did I could have filled a log book, but didn't keep track like I should have. I THINK I did, but I will try the whole set up again and make sure I do that.

What version is shown in your app info? Does "beta" follow the version number?

I uninstalled Waze from my phone then I downloaded and installed the beta version from "defaria"'s Google Drive- see his earlier post.
I made some progress thanks to your comment about starting Waze prior to connecting the phone to the car. I got it to the car's screen, and I can use it, but the sound isn't coming through the car's system, just through the phone.
I'll keep messing with it, but might you know what I'm not doing to get the sound to work?

OK, I didn't see the time there. Still haven't seen the colored traffic on the map. I'll keep my eye out for that...
I do know one thing - I'm definitely not getting any spoken notifications and AFAICT that's the main reason to prefer Waze over Maps.

Of course it I did - several times in fact. You only need to run Waze first to accept the terms and AFAICT you only need to do this once.

I really don't care about other GM vehicles or other cars for that matter. In my vette this is exactly what I experienced. Maybe it's because I have a 2016 with the firmware update to get AA working. Maybe, for example, the 2017's have a different version of the firmware. I don't know.
AFAICT you can't download from the Play Store. Maybe you can from the beta section of the Play Store - maybe you need to first be accepted into the Waze Beta. I applied. I was told I'd get an email soon. Never got an email. So I can't report problems and I can't go to the Play Store to download the beta. I went to APK Mirror to get it. Why they are using some other company, centercode, to run this is beyond me...
All I see when I log into the centercode site is:
Hello,
Thanks for applying to be a Waze Beta Tester!
We appreciate your patience as we review your application. Look out for an email from us in the upcoming week with more information.
PLEASE NOTE! We're currently out of free spots for new iOS Beta Testers, but we'd be happy to add you to our waiting list and contact you in the future.
after spending a weekend with Waze on AA, I can surely confirm this version is Beta. Pretty buggy for sure, so I would say for the folks looking for something reliable and stable, wait until GA of Waze on AA is released.
The OP DID mention this is BETA and to use at your own risk...

All I can say is your experience may not be typical. I am actually a Waze Beta tester, and specifically signed up for the Android Auto Waze Beta as well (separate sign-up). I went through all of the "official" steps, and my beta was downloaded directly from the Play Store.
All of the features you say are not working, work fine on my 2017 Corvette (including audio notifications). I have also tested it on a 2016 GM vehicle that was upgraded to Android Auto at the dealer. It works fine here as well.

Thanks again.
If the sound is not working, I would guess that is not a Waze problem. Can you play Pandora music through Android Auto? If you can here music, I would think you could hear Waze.

Yes, everything audio-wise works on the car's system except waze. And the waze audio comes through the phone fine.

You stumped me on that one. i don't know how it could play some sound over the car audio, and some over the phone. Sorry i couldn't help you more there.
I don't know all the technical aspects, but the only difference i can identify here is that i am an "official" beta tester with a beta downloaded from the play store not having any of these issues, vs you guys who are not beta testers with an apk-mirror beta version. Again, not saying it's what's causing these issues, but it's the only difference i can identify.
I just tried it again and got audio through the car. Great, right? Nah! After going back and forth from Maps to Waze I lost the audio. So I'm in Waze and use the mic search to get a destination, and I hear, "Okay, handing over to Waze". Then Waze repeats the search request but the audio is through the phone.
Hahahaha
Has to be because it's an unofficial beta app.
EDIT** I had some time and just couldn't let this go. I knew that I was missing something.
I needed to disable the "Play sound to phone speaker" setting in Waze ... That's it.
Still a tad iffy as far as reliability, but at least I know it can work.
But that doesn't answer why I heard the audio thru the system momentarily at one point.

I'm an "official" Waze beta tester also and I've reported a few bugs similar to what others have listed in this thread. The release from a few days ago is working fine in the vette and I've also used it successfully in my Tacoma with a Pioneer AVH4200 HU. It's not supposed to work with the Pioneer yet, but it does without any issues. Pretty happy so far. I can say that the big Waze screen in the vette is fantastic. Very sharp display and much better to look at while driving than my Samsung phone screen.
