I have a 2016 Z06 and the Range module threw its first CEL while I was on vacation (about 4 months after I bought the Z). Two weeks later it happened again.
Unplugging the Range and restarting the car will clear the DTC (loss of communications with TCM) and resume normal operation but the CEL won't extinguish until after several starts without fault are completed.
I usually drive in manual mode but I did use the Range today. I have a switched OBD-II extension plug and I turn it on a few seconds after starting the car and used that way it never has a problem.
Unless you want to play torque converter roulette I would either deal with the Range shortcomings or drive in manual mode. The wear that results in excessive RPM fluctuation and shudder only gets worse with time.
It is inconvenient to switch the Range module on and off AND you can add a simple external circuit to do this for you automatically but regardless of Range operational shortcomings I would rather deal with minor Range inconvenience than the major transmission operation inconvenience brought to us by a major GM screwup.
I received the latest Range AFM Beta device last week while I was away on business. I hope to put some miles on it over the coming weeks, hopefully they have the CEL issue finally resolved!
Someone recently posted where they use the extension cord but they wired the power on the cord to a switched accessory location. So now they have no switch, it just turns on when the power comes on for the car. Eliminates the worry about battery drain and potentially the CEL issue if it's power related. I'll try to find that post and see if they have a current update.
Here's the post. There are two versions in the post. One wiring it to an accessory/switched power source. Then another which inserts a time delay relay for the startup. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...h-the-car.html
That's probably because people assume that all Diablo products change the tune, which isn't true. The S1000 is the Range AFM equivalent, and it's OBD2 port based, no tune alterations.
I just spoke with them, and I'm going to give their s1000 device a try. I'm not seeing any feedback about CELs on theirs, so I'll see how it goes. They have a 30 days return policy.
I'll report back with results.
Very interested in the Diablo s1000. Anxiously awaiting Thunder's review..
I looked at Diablo's web site and they don't list a unit for the 2017 corvette. I would gladly lay down the 200.00 if the unit works without CEL and turned off on its own. And of course didn't goof with the warranty.

I asked the sales rep when I called, he said the unit works on the 2017.
They also have a 30 day return policy, so it's easily returnable if it doesn't work.

Well, that didn't take long.
Popped it in prior to start. Drove about 2.5 miles, shut it down for about 15 min. Then drove back about 1.5 miles, shut it down for about 20 min. Then drove a couple blocks, shut it down for min. On restart I had a CEL.
Just posted my own question about this. We herds tend to move in the same direction ;-).
In any case, I looked around the interwebs and found no mention of anyone using the diablo with a corvette. There's tons of results for silverado trucks and other cars. Keeping my pessimism silent until the next dissappointment...

Device should be here by Tuesday, so don't look for updates before then.
I switch the Range on after the car is started and backed out of the garage or if in a parked position after it has obtained a steady idle. I switch the Range off when it is in a parked position and still running, and than I switch off the ignition. So far no CEL problems. Have used the Range for the past 300 miles or so. Car is a 2016 and has about 2300 miles.
Exactly what I do with no issues. I have an extension cablefor the OBDII with switch.
From what I know from Range, the remaining issue seems to be with 2017+ vehicles. You have a routine now, but if you're certain you're on the latest production release of the Range stuff you may not have to shut on and off like you're doing.

I have a 2017 GS and the range unit was on the latest firmware 8.2R, and it was causing CELs, that's why I returned it.

I'm really hoping the problems with the Range unit get solved before I get my A8 C7 next spring. One of the things I enjoy about high powered automatic cars is you can be cruising along at speed and when you want to pass someone you slam the pedal down and it will downshift a bunch of gears instantly and push you back hard in the seat as it always chooses the best gear to be in for maximum acceleration and it does it in a split second. You don't get that same experience if you're using the paddles or if you're driving a manual, it takes your brain too long to decide which gear might be best for that situation.
If Range (or somebody else) doesn't solve this issue, I might be tempted to play warranty roulette and just have AFM tuned out. Chances are slim that I would have a warranty claim on the LT1 and if AFM is 100% disabled I would hope the chances of a warranty claim on the A8 might also be slim.
Happy that you have a 2017 GS like I do, which the betas from Range still are not solving the problem. The last one I got threw a CEL after 3 starts....didn't take long.
Thunder22, yes please, if you give the Diablo unit a try, let us know how it compares to the Range. I am afraid that if the two brands use the same circuit board internally, perhaps bought from an outside supplier, they may be identical. If some one has used the Diablo for a while with no CEL's set, maybe it is a different and better unit. I noticed that they are the same price.
I spoke to Diablo today; there Rep said it is a Range just rebadged. I spoke to Range also and they stated problems are related to not having the lasted version.

That's not true, i had a range with the latest version 8.2R before i sent it back 2 weeks ago. It caused CELs on my 2017 GS.
