2018 has digital readouts in track mode

Here is another way to look at it. I lost money trading the 17 for the 18, why should everyone else get the benefit of having my digital readouts without paying for it like I did? In reality I would be perfectly happy if they upgraded everyone, but on the other hand...Why shouldn't you just buy an 18 if you want the upgrades? That's not why I started this thread, but since people brought it up...

Correct, but many of us believe it applies more broadly across the platform. People can wish all they want, but don't count on it....

I've heard it said multiple times in different venues, one was at the bash for something different (the radio upgrades I think). It's a common message....

Besides, they have a vested interest in you getting the new car, I suppose...

I have a 2016 Harley Davidson Road Glide. HD updated their touring line to include an infotainment system in 2014. They regularly update the system, and all you have to do is download the patch or upgrade to a flash drive, and plug it into the bike. You don't even have to go to the dealer to get the updates, you go right to their website and DIY it.
I've never understood why GM (or any other automotive manufacturer, for that matter) doesn't do the same thing. Here's a link to the HD download site. Easy peasy, I've updated my bike 4 times already since I brought it home a year and a half ago...

complexities meaning "costs too much to have the dealer update every car"
I dont understand how the hell they thought that gauge, that is hard enough to read parked, was a good idea for track mode. JFC
It's kind of funny- despite having virtually infinite freedom for layout with LED screen, the C7 gauges are substantially worse than the C6. Temps are virtually impossible to read at a glace. The gas and temp gauges on the right are "eh" at best. the speedometer on the left is BEYOND useless. And I can't get an accurate understanding of my temps from the LCD screen. I just dont get how the heck this gets through. It's not like it costs GM any more to make the gauges have a digital readout anyway.
I wonder if I can get a 2018 ECU or whatever controls that and put it in my car. That's actually really important to me.

As far as the analog gauges, I consider the left analog speedometer purely standby instrumentation should the HUD and center display not be available. The fuel gauge is easy enough to see and I generally don't care about the boost gauge minus cross checking on the front straight if I'm concerned about heat soak. My primary instrument for speed is usually the HUD, secondary on the center display digits, standby with the left analog.
I'm not a fan of the 2015 and 2016 not allowing engine coolant temp to be one of the four instruments on track theme performance chapter page 1.
It's all about the cross check.

wait, you think it's more time consuming to read the needle gauges than to read "230 degrees" and ponder if that's getting too hot?

Yes. For a cross check digits are less efficient than round or bar gauges at understanding if you are in or out of limits. Digits are better for precise diagnostic information like a power trend check, oil level procedure for dry sump, speed limit compliance.

Finalist 2020 C7 of the Year -- Unmodified
Does this make my 2017 Z06 Vert obsolete?

We're there any changes in the gauges from earlier years of the C7 that were made and if so, were they back ported?
I'm with everyone in thinking there should be portions that are easily upgraded with a patch and those should be user upgrades. The car has its own cellular connection, should be a piece of case to segment off the code that can be upgraded and just push it out. Would be a great "win" for GM I think to compete with the likes of Tesla. That said, they have to build the code to support it and I don't think the platform is in that position as it stands. Maybe future models will be ( the C8) but my guess is the C7 is stuck with manual updates only from the dealer.
