Default 2018 PDR swap ?

Posted this in tech section with several looks but no response - maybe someone here may know.

Does anyone know if changing out the 2016 PDR module with the 2018 module will get you the new channels? Or does it require more hardware? Or is it even possible?

Thanks

the 2018's add the following channels to the PDR/Toolbox:

LF Wheel Speed
RF Wheel Speed
LR Wheel Speed
RR Wheel Speed
LF Wheel Displacement
RF Wheel Displacement
LR Wheel Displacement
RR Wheel Displacement
Yaw Rate
Intake Air Temperature
Ambient Air Temperature

There was an interesting post I was reading the other day regarding updating the HMI and HD Radio. The poster said that starting in 2017, GM changed the CAN Bus hardware and added new security to them to address hackers taking over cars, and it thought that this would make the post 17 modules incompatible with '16 and earlier cars.

I cannot seem to find the post right now.

It was me.

We know that in 2017 GM did change the MOST Bus, due to the addition of "Cybersecurity" to the HMI and Radio modules.

Based on some other things I've heard it seems likely that GM has implemented CAN Authentication with 2017. This would put a hard break with earlier modules. But it may be limited to just the MOST Bus. The only way to know for sure is to test it out by buying the new module.

I wonder if anyone on a 2017 or 2018 has installed a DSC controller (for MSRC) because I THINK that has to communicate on CAN and if that module changed then most definitely the entire car did.

GM only does incremental updates for production, so during a current model year you can get updates. But once they stop building that year, you are stuck.

This is different than many other OEMs which use carry over hardware from year to year and SW updates will work on older model years. GM has a REALLY bad habit about making yearly hardware changes (for cost reasons mostly).

I have a DSC controller in a 2017 and it works fine. If you want to run an Aim Solo DL that will log IAT, wheel speeds, and yaw as they have been on the bus since 2015 but are just not captured by the PDR system.

I was looking at some PDR data yesterday from my 2017 in Pi toolbox and it has the new channels in it. I guess that they are going to have to do a new release of the GM Cosworth toolbox to display them.

My personal opinion is that GM is "backwards" when it comes to software updates. This is 2017, not 1997. GM really needs to get with the program. It's devaluing their product. Almost every device has firmware updates these days, phones, computers, TVs, tablets, cameras, and electronics in other manufacturers cars. It's expected now.

This is what happens when cost and not user experience is your primary goal.

GM views you having to upgrade your car to get new stuff as a plus. They are the masters of planned obsolescence. The issue is that they are on a timeline that modern people will not accept.
