As soon as the wires are bumped the screen turns off. Even touching the screen was enough to set it off.

BTW just for future info... I got the name of the refurbisher that GM deals with, called them directly and will be shipping my screen unit directly to them.

I wondered about dealing directly with the refurbishment company and if there is a savings by doing so. I got the name of the place in NJ. As I understand it there are two. I went through the dealer and I had it in my hands the day after I ordered it. What is the process when going direct? Hopefully I'll never need to replace it again, but I'm curious.

Is there some big secret as to the name(s) of these refurb companies?

Seems like we are going out of our way to not speak it. "They", "the place", "them", etc etc.

It was $140 cheaper going direct to them, it's a company in Florida. They won't ship first except to GM dealers so I have to send my broken unit and they will turn around a good one same day.

Working for a large shipping company comes in handy here, I'll ship it tomorrow overnight for 10:30am delivery Friday and have them ship it back overnight.

There's not... I just didn't know how public the info was on who they deal with as I got the name from a friend at a dealership.

I can fix that for you.
Given it is likely a broken solder vias, opening the case and repairing it is very simple.

I considered doing it as I don't have a problem with electronic soldering, I'm just not sure what's involved with getting the screen off of the rails etc and would rather not end up with a bad core since everything is on an exchange basis.

Matt,

You have got this far, I say try to open it up and take a look, it seems like it will be an obvious fix. Plus it is a core at this point... Does anyone know what they did to eliminate the issue from happening again on the refurbs? strain relief? remove the tie wrap? longer cable?

It’s in a box on a plane heading to Florida. Should have it back early next week.

Current state. I didn’t have to remove the center console bottom, just the top.

You'd think there would be a dab of hot glue, silicone, or something around the 2 wires where they go into the screen enclosure to take any pressures off the end connections when the screen moves.

Did you try removing the sd card or usb stick if you had one in?

I had the black screen issue the other day and after I removed my sd card, all was well again. I've had this happen with the usb stick too, but not a black screen. Just unresponsive and frozen.

I have this problem intermittently and will probably have to replace the screen in the future. Could someone please post the page number(s) in the Helms manual showing how to remove the relevant dash trim pieces? Thanks.

Matt thanks for the pics of the new one!

Jeff, Stop retracting your screen! It appears to me in the picture of the new screen that they have kept the tie wrap and added an additional clamp that the wires run thru to keep the connectors from unseating? From OP's video it appears that the wire break was at the point where the wires enter the housing? There is an attached YouTube video showing how to remove the dash parts (carbon fiber change over). I was able to cure my issue so far by clipping the tie wrap, re-seating the wires, and NOT retracting the screen anymore.

for this failure mode, does it prevent your speakers are working as well?
I started mine up this morning and the screen was black and i didn't have audio (not even turn signals)

No. At least in my case. It was display only. You may have a different issue.
