Default Urgent: Drive it down or transport it my new C7 this weekend?

Just bought a new C7 Z51 Admiral Blue 1LT 7M from Les Stanford last week and I booked flights from Raleigh, NC to Detroit, MI to pick it up this coming weekend and drive it down 12 hrs on Sunday and Monday.

But the weather forecast is getting worse everyday. First it was going to be below freezing, so in anticipation, I made an appointment with the Discount Tire shop nearby Les Stanford to put on a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus RF on Saturday, the day I pick it up, and I'll ship my MPSS back to NC with Fedex.

But now, snow is expected for Saturday and Monday, so now I'm checking with transport companies for options.

What do you guys suggest? For those living in Michigan, will I be ok to drive south out of MI with snow and Pilot Sports A/S tires with freezing/sub-freezing temps? Is black ice typical on the highways?

I don’t think anybody can tell you what’s the right thing to do in your situation, you’re going to let have to let your conscience be your guide on this one.
We know you’re excited about getting your new car, but it would be a terrible shame to put it in a ditch on the way home.
This is the accumulated snowfall map for Monday the 11th. Keep in mind it’s just a forecast.
Good luck!

No need to take a chance with your new 70K car. Think I would play it safe and go with the transport at around $1.00 per mile. No need for any undo stress.

Yup.

To be specific, how are the roads in Michigan after the first snow showers of the season? Does black ice develop easily once night/sub-freezing hits? Do people drive their corvettes in this kind of weather?

This guy in his C6 Z06 has driving in the snow down pat, even towing a trailer with a snowmobile.

I doubt that he's heading to Florida.

Nope doesn’t look like he’s Florida bound.
Hopefully the guys from The great out Yonder, and Canada, such as Woodson, and a couple others will chime in soon and ease your concerns or set you straight. They tend to be a lot braver in deteriorating weather conditions than some of us.

I bought a 2017 Grand Sport from Les Stanford about a month ago, they handled setting up the shipping to Virginia; open transport was $550 and enclosed was $800. I chose open as the weather was nice, and I had no issues.

If it were me, I'd save the $$$ on getting new tires up there and use that to ship it, and do so via enclosed transport. One, I wouldn't trust the road conditions, and Two, I wouldn't want to cover my brand new Vette in all the crap that will be on the roads. I know the car won't melt, but still hate to cover a new car in crap on day one.

Even discounting the possibility of ice, would you rather get home in a brand new car so covered in salt/chemicals you aren't sure what color it is and spend hours cleaning it all off, or would you rather have a truck roll up and have a shiny new Vette roll out the back to enjoy fresh and clean? Then, if you still want the new tires, you can get them at home at a location you know. Just my two cents.

I'd Ship it, or wait for better weather. Can you delay pickup?

Thanks all for the suggestions. Yeah, with this unpredictable weather the roads will be unsafe, dirty, and salted, the frontend will be destroyed, and it won't be a fun ride at all.

Let's say I'm having some sleep issues waiting for this car, so delaying pickup may cause further health degradation and is a no go, especially since the weather won't get better with time.

Looks like shipping it is the best/safest/cleanest/fastest option. Now I gotta see if I can get any money back for the flights.

I drove my car from Georgia to NY 900 miles when I bought it. Not a big fan of it. No incidents but I was lucky These cars sit low. Driving across country in Camaro I drove over a muffler, another time a tire or an animal ( I never found out what it was )). Now with bad weather for you, just ship it.im learning the longer I have my car I don’t care what the costs are. I love it.

I didn't even want to risk it 2 months ago... definitely wouldn't want to now. If you need a transport let me know. Ask my guy for a quote. He doesn't have 3-4 week waits like other enclosed transports. Price is the same and flexible schedule.

If your tickets are non-refundable you most always have up to 12 months to redeem towards purchase of another flight. You also have up to 12 months to attend the Ron Fellows Performance Driving school in Nevada, which GM pays all but $1000 as a bonus for purchasing your C7.

You made the right decision on having the car shipped. Have you seen/inspected the C7 you are purchasing?

I was considering buying a base 1LT from him this month but they bumped the price up again from 25% off to 20% so I decided to stay with my C6 for now. I considered flying in and driving it home but honestly the weather was a wild card. I drive my C6 in snow here but up north is a whole different world.

I would have it delivered.

American wants $200 to change the date for each ticket, which orignally cost $140. Change fees should be proportional to the ticket cost, but alas.

I have seen pictures, but haven't inspected it physically. Les Stanford have been great.
