Default Apple Car Play

I was a big fan of car play for maps navigation until I realized it eats up data usage like crazy! As my ‘16 Z51 does not have factory navigation so I’m forced to use my iphone. Anyone have a secret to saving data while using car play maps?

I use Waze and Google Maps. Apple Maps is as awful as its reputation. The directions are terrible and waste an enormous amount of time in traffic.

I switched to an unlimited data plan which became available this past year on both Verizon and AT&T and that solved that dilemma. Prior to the major players reintroducing unlimited data, I tried T-Mobile for about 4 months as they offered unlimited music streaming which was eating up the bulk of my data. Unfortunately, T-Mobile's coverage is lacking compared to AT&T and Verizon and I canceled that line.

I agree that Apple Maps is absolutely horrible, and I've been an Apple fan since first MacIntosh was sold in 1984. I still have all their devices, Watch, iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air, but the Maps app purely sucks.

I bought a piece of property 4 years ago, and built a new house and barn. Google had it updated on the satellite image within 6 months of finish of construction. As of today 4 full years later, Apple Maps still shows a vacant lot.

I use Waze. Apple Maps has taken me to an incorrect location more times than I can remember. Moreover, it is clueless when it comes to traffic jams.

Waze and Google Maps don't consume much data. I have not measured Apple Maps. I will do a test next time I drive and turn on all three at the same time and see how much data actually gets used. Based on reports online, Apple Maps is 10% less than Google Maps when it comes to data usage.

I have Sprint with unlimited data which has been working good for me, so if that's an option, you might look into that. I believe almost all carriers offer unlimited data plans for somewhat reasonable prices.

Can't say I've had any trouble with Apple Maps (supported by TomTom). When looking for map info on my iMac computer, I've used both Google and Apple Maps and sometimes both to see if there are different results and both have matched (so far).

As for factory Nav, that's a different story. I recently traded in my 2012 Yukon Denali for a Certified Pre-Owned 2016 Yukon Denali. So I noticed GM just released a new "2018" map update for it, so I decided to update for convenience, even though I could also use Apple CarPlay now in my Yukon. Well, first the wife and I took a roadtrip up to Wichita and she, for whatever reason, wanted to go to K-Mart. Come to find out that one of them that closed back in January of this year was still in this supposedly updated POI listing!!! Next lack of current information was when we were out around town back in OKC and wife wanted to go to "Trader Joes," so I wanted to get the best route from where we were at the time and it wanted to send me to Tulsa for the closest one!! Ours in OKC has been open well over a year and was not in the POIs for this 2018 map update!!

Moral of the story, don't count on these new GM map updates as having current info!! You're always better off with Google or Apple maps!!!

Google Maps has an option to download map data while you're on wifi. I was out of the country recently, and I knew I wouldn't have mobile data at all. So I downloaded the maps while I was still at home. It worked great. Maybe Apple maps has a similar feature?

With Google Maps you can also download map data not on WiFi. It just allows you to limit it to WiFi only for those with limited data plans. Like others I have Sprint unlimited. I never think about limits and never configure things to be WiFi only. I don't need to.

There also is an app called Here WeGo that works without a constant data connection.

Apparently CarPlay can also do this:

However, the instructions may be out of date.

Well, that's interesting!!! I clicked on the highlighted "caching" in the article and it lead me to this:

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/10...ne-navigation/

I see this is old, but I would presume applicable to the current IOS. Unless I'm missing something (very likely), it sounds like Apple Maps does this (loads the applicable maps) automatically when you plan the route while still having a data link. Obviously, if you try to set up a new route/destination without LTE or wifi available, this won't work.

I need to find where all the Apple Maps function/capabilities are and do some research!!

THANKS!!

I just tested Maps in CarPlay. I drove from my home to a destination about 10 miles away. I first opened the Maps app. on my iPhone and told it to go to my destination. Once it had calculated the route I put my iPhone into Airplane mode (turned off cellular and wifi).

I then connected my iPhone to my GS and selected CarPlay and Maps. CarPlay guided me with voice and graphics to my destination so it had cached the route information. However, when I tried to have CarPlay take me back home it would not calculate the route without connectivity. I had assumed it would have the necessary information to do that but apparently not.

One disadvantage of CarPlay was that when I parked my GS I could not touch the top of the screen to get the front camera icon. I had to go to the menu and from there to the cameras.

I was also disappointed that I couldn't access playlists, albums, etc., when listening to music via CarPlay. I had to select what I wanted on my phone and then CarPlay would only advance or go back through music.

there is one solution that I personally use, NavTool interface plus Here Maps, they can work 100% offline and don't use any data. HERE maps are free
