iPhone Connection Issue

iPhone Connection Issue
When I connect my iPhone 7 with the latest system update I have an issue. All of the Apple Carplay options work fine and I can listen to the radio at the same time as say using Maps for guidance projected to the screen. The issue I have is with WAZE which I understand will not display on the car’s screen. However, the issue I have is that when WAZE is active I cannot listen to the radio. Is there some button I need to press to allow the radio to function normally when using WAZE? Note the screen in the car does not change it is just I no longer seem to be able to use it.
The only solution I have found to this issue is to just use a power supply plugged in to power the iPhone for WAZE.
Edit: I should add that I have the same issue with my iPhone and my wife's iPhone and that I am using an Apply supplied cord not an after market one.

FWIW, I have used my iPhone 6s iOs 11.2.1 with Waze connected both by USB for CarPlay and via bluetooth and have observed no interference with radio function... The main difference is that my iPhone has a battery pack/case and uses a standard micro USB/USB cord
