Anyone else look and see that the '19 GM pickup trucks with 10 speed auto are getting what they call Dynamic Fuel Management that allows the V-8s to run on any number of cylinders between one and eight depending on load? I haven't looked to see how it is implemented in detail but I wonder if that will be smoother in operation than our 4/8 setup. I also haven't seen whether they will adapt that to the 8 speed power trains like our C7s but I am guessing not?

I recall that Delphi rolled out the prototype for this several years ago and partly it was to address concerns from some of the Asian automakers about uneven cylinder wear with a system that always shut off the same cylinders.

AFM came out around 2004 under its original name DoD or displacement on demand. As we have seen 14 years later the system is still far from perfect and there is no way in hell I would want to be a first year guinea pig for their latest Rube Goldberg scheme.

Just look at what the AFM did to the torque converters in the earlier Vettes. I can't imagine what this new idea from the brain trust will do to the running works.

The most desirable feature would be an easy way to turn it off...permanently.

I'm definitely in the minority since I like the DoD in my '10 Silverado and AFM on the new Z06. Will put it to the test next week with the 1st distance trip in the 'Vette to visit family, about 1100 miles round trip. Curious to see how the mileage plays out and yes, committing sacrilege by using Eco mode for mileage and cruise to avoid tickets!

DFM is just a rename of Delphi’s “Dynamic Skip Fire” technology. Presumably the former sounded better than the latter for marketing reasons. Read more about it here: https://www.delphi.com/dynamic-skip-fire-1
