Some experienced delayed engagement and hard 1-2 shifting. An engineering change was made to the trans on 10/27/15. Cars with build dates after that were generally good to go.
If you're considering the purchase of a 2016 I would read the entire A8 sticky in this section as well as other threads pertaining to A8 woes before committing. If the car is up-to-date on current replacement parts (stator and TC) it might be okay. It's a crap shoot, IMO, but I would check the car's service history after doing some thorough research. If all checks out and you commit, I would still get an extended drivetrain warranty as 2021 nears. My 2¢ as an A8 vet.
There's no simple way to answer your question. It seems to be the luck of the draw. Most A8s are fine, some have had issues. 2015 seems to have been the worst year, '16 was little better, and there have been fewer problem reports in each subsequent model year.

Seems to be my conclusion luck of the draw, not keen on detective work just buying a toy.
It may not be your cup of tea, but manuals have been bullet-proof in all MYs. The 2014 A6 has also been trouble-free, and you'd likely get the best deal on that MY if you're just looking for a weekend toy.
