When you plug it in or turn it on if you are using a switch watch for the blinking LEDs. It will show you the version. For instance, mine blinks 8 times then hesitates and then blinks 6 times. This means version 8.6.

Since you didn't buy it directly from Range, at a minimum you will have to pay shipping to and return from Range if you need it updated. They may not want to help you out if where you bought it on ebay is not a certified range distributor. That's why I bought mine directly from Range. V8.6 has been out since October you can hope the ebay vendor is not selling old stock.

Yup ebay is not certified - guess we will find out what route to go when it arrives - its probably fine
Range site didn't mention they wouldn't update it and yes postage paid to return is needed no biggie also there is an rma page to fill out info they request

What do you like about the Range? I'm thinking about getting one.
Doesn't matter where you buy it from, I bought it from a forum member, but Range will upgrade your firmware for free. You just send return postage, they sent it back in 2 business days.
